442 are more complicated than desiros because they have manual selective door opening, as well as needing locking bars etc to take doors out of service. Desiros can be isolated in about 10 seconds without much effort.

Does anyone know if the route restrictions have been lifted or whether they will still have to run as 9xxx (with two drivers)?

Seems from 6/1 , two drivers will still be required south of Woking on both Bournemouth mainline and Pompey direct.

I believe it’s only Woking towards Basingstoke, two drivers have never been required on the Pompey direct just onwards from Woking?

Haha, maybe I haven't. An error says that I can't start a conversation with you . Maybe you don't accept messages.

Apologies for some reason that wasn’t turned on.

Also happy to be corrected on the above I thought the issue was out of Waterloo to Woking and then on down the mainline towards Southampton and not down the direct, hence the question mark.

Disappointing if progress hasn’t been made!

If the 442s do start anytime soon in the new year, I’ll be interested to watch their performance and reliability.

Are the ramps now compatible with the 442s for loading and unloading passenger wheelchairs and catering trolleys?

Having no emotional attachment to them, I remain pessimistic about the prospects of the 442s. I still think they would perform better if restricted to the Weymouth to Waterloo side.

Although that's been discussed many times as to why it wouldn't be possible operationally due to the splitting and joining, meaning only compatible 444s and 450s can be used.

I don't want to reread all 149 pages, so I might be remembering incorrectly, but is this because the plan is to run 442s in pairs only, for reliability reasons..? But when they're retractioned won't they be more reliable, and so could run as single units again...?

When a train arrives at Bournemouth from Waterloo it splits. The unit that remains there doesn't wait for the front unit to come back, but joins to the next unit from Weymouth. Therefore all units have to be compatible with each other. There aren't enough 442s to cover the entire service.

Feasibly when retractioned they could .

I think there is a desire to avoid attaching/detaching outside of depots as it requires a shunters to be trained and maintain competence at stations where the de/coupling happens. Currently also it would mean a brake continuity test (BCT) being carried out each time which adds time and requires another competenr person. When the traction and brake systems are replaced that would most likely remove the need for a BCT. I'm not sure if there any plans to replace the couplings with dellners as that could remove need for shunters too.

Right now they need to focus and and concentrate on reintroducing any 442 in a reliable manner and it seems that's the focus from 6/1. They needed these trains running to fulfill the timetable promises. Once they're all out and reliable then they can send another unit or two for works. Then they all need fault free testing and driver update training.

I'm interested in changes to the braking system. Presumably the upgrade is restricted to the two motor bogies only?
Does the 442 have any regen braking currently or is it all friction.

the plan is to make the brakes self proving, removing the need for a continuity test, not sure if they’re intending on doing regen as well.

-Couple and uncoupling is a major reliability issue causing much real delay as well as well as bad stats (MTIN) so best avoided on operators with high reactionary delay too. e.g. SN and SWR.
8-10 units is more than enough to run services in the interim so the other 8-10 can go in for the retraction.

Regen braking and the “modern” version of the three step brake as fitted to retractioned 455s

I'm curious of this also. On their last outing I believe week by week the 1xxx WTT listings were canned and replaced with 9xxx STP. Something which still isn't showing in the system for next week as yet, assuming it's still going to be the case?

4 diagrams from Monday seems to be the plan at present, running under 9xxx headcodes.

I guess they've not been uploaded yet as a brief look yesterday on RTT I couldn't see an 9xxx Bradford's.

Interesting typo there :)

On another note, 5Q80 came up from Bournemouth this evening, now on its way back down (5Q81). Crew refresher?

The 9xxx headcodes are now in for Monday, 4 diagrams worth.

Cheers for head up.

Lol, I really should pay more attention. quite how Bradford's is a substitute for headcodes I don't know....

It's so random , I won't edit it......

5q80/81 was probably more about making sure the units can make it there and back in one piece :)

Speaking to a couple of people, it was for management and coaches to refresh themselves.
