"Fast Train Approaching"

Quick question

I was down in Cross Gates the other day when an announcement cam over saying to stand back from the platform edge, a fast train was approaching.

So I did as I was told and the 150150 cam crawling past. It also announced when the East Coast drags came past.

The question is, how come it will announce an irregular train (which this was) and not a fast TPE or XC service?

Is it because the 150 movement and EC drags are not in the WTT?

They announced the same thing at Stalybridge... and a TPE 170 crawled past on a Hull service.

When my station had a freight through running line they would announce it even though there was no platform (though because the station was in a cutting it did create quite a draft) They didnt announce any non freight trains using the through line though.

At Mexborough it only seems to be when TPE services go through that the "stand clear" announcement is played, and only very occasionally for the XC and fast Northern services. It never gets played for freight trains despite the fact they cause a hell of a lot more backdraft than any passenger services.

I think it is only announced for passengers as you would think that a person could differentiate between a freight and a passenger (although we know this is often not true), therefore preventing the passenger from walking close to a train which will not stop and the consequences it may have. I think an announcement is most likely if a non-stop service is passing just before a stopper, at least this is the case at Carlisle

All i hear down in the south is "Please stand well away from the edge of platform ... The approching train is not scheduled to stop at this station". It plays reguardless of the speed at which the train passes through.

At Thirsk the same message as Fincra5, although the message doesn't play at night, only flashes up on the noticeboard.

At Southampton it plays even when the train is stationary in the platform having just let a load of passengers alight at its destination.

At Eastleigh station in 2005 I heard that announcement play when a 220 pulled into platform 2 and remained there without taking on passengers.

I haven't heard a 'Fast train approaching' announcement or one along those lines at Romsey, which is a FGW owned station, and I don't think I've heard the announcement at any other FGW stations either.

Up north I don't think the infrastructure can handle such specific data, so it just has to guess (by booked time for example) when a train is going to pass, or is set off manually.

The announcement system at Romsey is not capable of handling fast trains, that's why!

I like the system at East Croydon which plays a trumpet sound out of a speaker at the base of platform monitor when it starts to flash up **Stand Clear**. If you happening to be standing under or near the monitor at the time it can really startle you!

I suppose it depends on the relevant system in use. When I used to announce at Huddersfield the old Ditra system was manual, and you had to watch the train approaching on the map then press play at the right time.

More modern systems will allegedly play this automatically, but I suppose it will depend on whether the relevant train is programmed in the database correctly, where the track circuits are in relation to the station etc. For example, the new system which Northern recently installed can announce "the train now approaching platform..." a good 5 minutes before the train at some stations which means, by time it arrives, more folk have landed and everyone has forgotten what is going on.

"Stand well away from edge of platform X. The approaching train is not scheduled to stop at this station" - which is automically used for anything booked for a "pass" at SOU.

"Stand away from the train at platform X - this train is not in use. Stand away from the train at platform X - this train is not in use." - which is automatically used for ECS passenger workings etc. which are booked to stop at the station but aren't for passenger use.

Having had a spell in the SWT patch, I think Woking's system needs a bit of tweek, standing on platforms 2 & 4 the other day and two fast trains went hammering through at high speed and then the announcement kicked in! :roll:

The nice lady at Tamworth never shuts up, still can come in handy as you know when they say platform 1 or 2 its not going to be a vomiter or pendo (we hope for cans) but most of the time its a skoda or shed

Simply put, it's a issue with the CIS not picking up the train location from the train describer feeds as the same problem occurs over here.

When it says 'stand clear' it was actually for a train approaching, not one that went through some 45 seconds previous.. or announcing 'the train now arriving on platform 1...' as it was already half way to Drayton Park!

Oh I know there are the 2 diffrent ones, I travel regualy to/ through SOU, but it was the former announcement I was refering to which should as you have pointed out have been/be the later "stand away..." announcement.

Heres a question for those in the know; sometimes when I catch the York train from Blackpool North it is announced as a "Northern Trains Service" but on the platform screens it says Anglia... but not all the time.

Now, is this just because "Anglia" is the first in a drop-down list or something?
