Could a siding be created on the Manchester Airport spur?

Surely there is room for a siding to be built on the airport spur. TPE units could pop into there if they are on time and wait there until 10 mins before booked out.

Have you ever travelled on this line stretch? Where is this room for a siding to which you make reference to?

Yes quite a few times actually. It would have to be near Heald Green Jn. Of course it's a bit more complicated with the airport relief road now and it is rather tight. The area between the railway and the car park past the threshold for the runway is probably the only option? Interestingly from satellite imagery this land is owned by NR and there is an access ramp. I've attached an image to support this.

I appreciate this is completely off topic, so might warrant another thread.

Indeed, and, assuming time permitted, be cleaned while they were there. That effectively resurrects the idea of carriage sidings, which, throughout most of the history of railways, people saw as being perfectly natural. From a capacity viewpoint, a stabling siding would effectively convert the Airport from a 4-platform station into a 5-platform one.

Where on earth has the sidings idea come from?!?

If you were going to chuck a few million at such a problem you'd be better off just extending the 200 metre platform 4 to 300 metre so that it could accommodate TPE 5/6 coach and Northern 4/6 coach!

The sequencing of Northern services on top of TPE services isn't so much an issue - but both TPE moving to 6 coach operation and Northern to 4 & 6 and platform lengths not being ideal to allow both to share one at the same time.
