Trowbridge > Wareham/Swanage

Afternoon all (and apologies if it's not when you're reading this )

Not had much luck working this one out yet, as it appears on my searches to be more expensive to get combo day returns than an Off Peak Return Never normally that way around it would seem.

Looking to do Trowbridge to Wareham on Saturday, not fussed which way I go but I want to do it for the cheapest amount. Cheapest through fare with Y-P is around £15, route Yeovil. Think it was about £18 via Southampton.

Also, for some odd reason, PlusBus isn't available at Wareham for bus travel to Swanage, so is there a through fare to Swanage available at all? Haven't gotten East Coast or FGW search engines to find it. If it doesn't exist, anyone got Wareham to Swanage bus fare gen?

After a quick play, I've found that Avantix shows bus day returns from Bournemouth-Swanage Bus, price £6 or £3.95 with a YP railcard. A period return is the same price, a single is £4, YP £2.65. I can't see anything from Wareham, but there may be local bus services.

As the route goes past Norden Park and Ride it may be cheaper to get off there rather than Swanage.

With a Y-P Railcard, the three Trowbridge - Wareham routes listed are:
route DORCHESTER WEST - SVR £13.75
route SALISBURY - SVR £15.40
route NOT LONDON - SVR £29.05

The best CDR split I can find is:
TROWBRIDGE - DORCHESTER STNS CDR £9.30
DORCHESTER STNS - WAREHAM CDR £3.85
Total £13.15, saving 60p.

PlusBus isn't available at Wareham for bus travel to Swanage, so is there a through fare to Swanage available at all?

There is no PlusBus around Wareham. There is a destination SWANAGE BUS for which the interchange station is Bournemouth. This does not give unlimited travel but is valid for one return journey between Bournemouth and Swanage. The adult add-on price to a Bournemouth fare is £4 single and £6 return. Child and railcard discounts are available on through fares. Sorry, I've no idea whether this would be better for you than travel via Wareham.

Hmm, so I can go to the ticket office and ask for a return to Swanage then. Bail at Bomo for the 50 bus to Swanage.

Trowbridge - Bournemouth is £15.40, don't know about splitting though. That'd be £19.35 with the bus. I don't know the fares from Wareham to Norden but I'd imagine it'll work out cheaper as it's less than 5 miles from Wareham to Norden against about 14 miles from Bournemouth to Swanage.

Yup the 50 bus goes over the chain ferry from Sandbanks to Shell Bay so handy to take in the view of the yachts in Poole Harbour and the millionaire's mansions. Mind you you won't get very far on Wilts & Dorset for a few quid cash fare. A single on the 142/143/144 (which predates the current 40) in 1999 was £3.25 from Poole to Swanage.

The through ticket via Dorchester West I think will allow you to travel via Weymouth and back. There is an easement somewhere if someone can be bothered to look it up.

If you wanna travel on Wilts & Dorset, buy an Explorer from a First Southern National driver in Dorchester or Weymouth and that'll only cost you £6.50 and it's valid across the South as far as Stagecoach Coastline's 700 in Brighton. Come to think about it, if you can plan your schedules well, get off the train at either Dorchester or Weymouth and use the 31/X53 to get to Wareham. Gorgeous views on a sunny day.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested the most fun way of getting to Swanage which would involve a trip on the heritage railway from Norden down to the sea.

That would cost £4.50 though but the slight extra expenditure would be worth it in my opinion. (I'm assuming, perhaps unreasonably, that you would be content to save money on the Wareham-Norden leg of your journey by walking the 3 miles, however!)

Yep the 50 is a nice opentop trip, though quicker to go to Wereham and get the 40 and I asked the driver last month how much an explorer ticket would cost and I'm pretty sure it was arround £7.50 now.

Still I've been known to get the senic 50 in and take the quck trip to Wereham on the 40 out.

Exactly why i suggested buying it from a First driver as it is cheaper and also a more scenic route by the X53 than train between Weym/Dorch and Wareham. The ticket is then valid on all WD buses. WD fares have always used a higher base than many others. It cost me £7.10 return last Saturday on the X3 between Salisbury and Cooper Dean.

It's less than five minute walk across the cattle market to Dorchester South from West. I've got a feeling that if you went via Weymouth you'd miss a quicker connection.

It did use to be that case a few years back in the evening return journey for the final connection back to Westbury where the SWT Weymouth train arrives at Upwey about 5 minutes before the Wessex train to Westbury arrives in the other direction so if you went all the way to Weymouth you'd have missed your connection. Not sure what it's like now.

A couple of years ago I used a couple of complimentry Stagecoach ones on Wilts and Dorset, though they did look at me strangly and wern't sure if it was valid and one dirver on the 50 told me it wasn't valid but I managed to talk him round.

The dayrider gold issued by Stagecoach weren't valid but the Explorer should have been across the south on what i believe were ex-NBC companies. They all used to be of the same design scratchcard until that was changed when I think First Southern National started issuing only paper-based ones. I did it once on a First Provincial Explorer Camberley-Aldershot-Farnham-Winchester-Southampton-Ringwood-Bournemouth-Poole-Weymouth-Exeter. The Stagecoach Hants & Surrey driver at Farnham had to consult his inspector before deciding that it was OK. Then the following day I did Exeter-Lyme Regis-Dorchester-Blandford-Salisbury-Andover-Basingstoke-Camberley-Farnborough on a Wilts & Dorset one, again only the Hants & Surrey driver on the final leg refused to accept it although I refused to pay or get off the bus and he had to ring the inspector at the end before grudgingly allowing me on.
