When using Piccadilly platforms 13/14 recently (mid December), I have noticed the Manchester to Buxton service departing platforms 9/10/11/12. This seems a strange set-up given the path, does anyone know why this was the case?

Makes sense for the inbound working to stay over that side.

There's a crossover that's been plain-lined out in the station throat for quite a few weeks now, the box is probably working with what he's got available to use.

According to RTT, the two hourly Buxton services are mostly booked to alternate between platforms 3 and 11.

For a couple of years at least there has regularly been a Buxton service waiting within platforms 9-12 when I've been on my way to platform 14 for my train home from work.

Not that odd, really.

The Buxtons will use the Fasts inwards of Slade Lane, to avoid conflicts with stuff coming off the Styal line onto the Slows.

The Fasts then become the middle pair of tracks at Ardwick, which basically feed Platforms 5-12 in the middle of the station (9/10/11/12 all being a single lead)
