On Saturday 1 May, Lord Andrew Adonis will be at Wrexham General for a flying visit. He arrives at 5.30 pm and leaves at 7 pm.

Wrexham and Shropshire have kindly offered to host a Question Time Event in their Cafe at the station and I would like to invite you and any members interested to come along.

Andrew is widely regarded as a very impressive Secretary of State and we have much to tell him of our achievements, ambitions and plans for rail in Wrexham.

If there is a large response there will be a huge queue, maybe a list of questions should be drafted for Lord Adonis prior to his arrival to be read to him by whoever is hosting the event

Agree, as W/S are hosts, it should be a polished event,

Welcome Nick, Politics aside, I agree, he carries a lot of respect, I have a lot of time for him, he as been a good friend to rail up here.
I for one will most certainly be at the event.

Lord Adonis is a rare breed - a transport minister who understands railways. I suspect that whatever the result of the election we'll have a new Minister and I bet he won't do half as good a job as Andrew Adonis.

I've actually met him ( briefly ); he is very attentive and does listen carefully to what is being put to him.

It was pretty clear from the outset that he believed in electrification and high speed rail and he's achieved, as far as possible in the limited time he's had, to push both these projects from being treated with (at least) indifference from the DfT, all the way to the front of the department's plans for the next 5-15 years.

I think the 200 carriages plan was inherited by Adonis, or at least came about before electrification was proposed for Man-Liv and the GWML which is effectively what killed it.

Just as scope - Adonis hasn't been in for a year yet. I think he's managed to do a respectable amount in a year!

While on a Manchester tram last week he was recognised by a 70 year old passenger who went upto him and congratulated him on his performance. Hard to imagine Kelley or Hoon having that happen.

Lord Adonis was making another of his nationwide rail journeys with the benefit of a 7 day rover ticket. He had this day travelled from Euston via Milton Keynes and Stafford to Liverpool and visit to Edge Hill (The oldest working station), then on via Bidston to Wrexham. He left Wrexham headed for Cardiff on the 1846

The meeting at Wrexham station went well, included members of the local rail partnership, rail users association and of course politicians present,Lord Adonis took questions on local rail matters and Llangollen Rail Soc move into Corwen. He also visited the W/S facilities & stabling bays where the trains are serviced & cleaned.

All present enjoyed meeting the Minister who took a keen interest in the questions put to him, a very pro rail person. And thanks to W/S for excellent refreshments in their cafe.

Indeed, I'm not particularly a political person myself, but have to respect him for taking the often overlooked Borderlands Line route into Wrexham. As an enthusiast, it's the one line I'm truly mad about. At any rate, I hope he enjoyed the journey.

So would I, I just can;t see it happening if the Tories and the Lib Dems get together!

Oh I agree it wont happen (mores the pity) but it would be nice to keep a TM that LIKES the railways.

The tories get in and the conversation goes, Theresa you know you were the shadow Transport Minister, well we have decided to keep the Labour TM as he is doing such a good job so we are going to make you redundant, you have 5 minutes to empty your desk.
As you say, cant see it happening, it is just another case of politics getting in the way of what is best for the country.

Despite the scare mongering in the right wing press, perhaps a coalition government may not be a bad thing. Most people recognise that we are in a financial mess, and it could be that working together would be beneficial! Although I;m sure I'll ge ttold that it failed in the 1970's and we need strong government blah blah!

Even though I think El Gordo's run this country into the ground, I have very little faith in his succesor, who will almost certainly be David Cameron after this Thursday.

The Lib Dem's seem to be the most pro-rail of the three main parties, so as a lifelong enthusiast I should in theory be voting for them. However, I disagree with their pro-Europe stance and since the Lib Dems would probably enter a coalition with Labour, I've cast my vote for the Tories (since I'm away from my constituency I applied for a postal vote), simply to get Mr Brown out of office. I've done this even though I'm fairly certain the DfT's electrification projects will be cancelled under a Tory government, and I wouldn't be surprised if Crossrail is cancelled too: all in the name of saving a few billion quid quickly without anyone noticing, even though more lines should be electrified and Crossrail should be built otherwise by 2030 sitting on the roofs of trains leaving London termini will be commonplace (unless H&S says otherwise)
