Travelling from Sankey / Warrington West

Hi folks,

Can anyone clarify things with regard tickets to/from Sankey.

For example, if I buy a return Sankey - Liverpool, travel out on the 07:45, but miss the 17:19 (the only evening return) I would need to return to Warrington West. What do I need to do to ensure my ticket is valid?

I note the prices seem to be the same from both stations. Do I need to buy a single Sankey - Warrington West? Is it a zero excess (and, if so, how do I sort that)? Is there an easement of which I am hitherto unaware?

[I probably should note that Sankey is significantly more convenient to me so would always use the rare service from there rather than walking the extra distance to Warrington West.]

Excessing the start of a return ticket is not an "entitled" excess. Therefore what you would probably be charged is a single from the last stop of the train you are on to Warrington West (if you weren't just let off, and assuming you were not PFed on a Northern service).

The best approach, provided the tickets don't bar Break of Journey (I can't see any Warrington-Liverpool tickets that do, and Anytimes generally don't) and given them being the same price, would be to buy the "longer" ticket. That is if travelling from Sankey to Liverpool buy the Warrington West ticket, and if travelling to Manchester buy from Sankey.

So that would likely be a Widnes - Warrington West single... I guess I will have to buy from Warrington West. [Which is a shame as I am trying to do my bit for passenger numbers at Sankey!]

[On the return journey you can break your journey (finish short) at Warrington West as it is on the route from Liverpool to Sankey.] Not accurate. My apologies.

In addition, I can also generate itenaries to Liverpool doubling back at Warrington Central, so if you miss your outbound train you may catch a train to Manchester and change there. Note that this does not apply in the reverse direction, ie you may not double back at Widnes to travel to Manchester.

Excessing passed the origin on a ticket is not even possible any more on a Star Mobile machine (which Northern guards use). Only excessing beyond the destination can be done, so worth buying from the furthest origin from your destination. Would make sense for Northern to add an easement to allow tickets for Warrington West to be valid to Sankey and vice versa given the limited service Sankey now has.
