Help please! London to Edinburgh, today!

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help with a train ticket query. I am trying to get from London to Edinburgh this evening. I have 2 tickets - Euston to Warrington and Warrington to Edinburgh. The best way for me to travel is to get the 1630 virgin trains service to glasgow, and to change at preston at 1830 then get the 1900 service to edinburgh. My concern is that the 1630 to preston is a direct train (i.e. doesn't stop at warrington), and so I am wondering if my tickets will be valid? Common sense dictates that it will, but common sense doesn't always apply!

No, sorry. With two regular tickets like that, your train has to stop at Warrington. It's likely that you'd be asked to buy a new London-Preston ticket on the train.

Exceptions can apply if one of the tickets is a season ticket, but not in this case. The actual rules are in the NR conditions of carriage, but I don't have them to had to give a direct quote.

However you should be able to go to the ticket office at Euston and ask them to excess the ticket from Warrington to Preston, this will effectively turn your London - Warrington ticket into a London - Preston, and you only pay the difference between the two fares.

Excessing the Warrington ticket to Preston is a good idea, but if you've got an advance ticket it might be a bit expensive.

Thanks for the fast response, I will pay the excess for warrington-preston. Any idea how much it will be? My tickets are both parts of off-peak returns but with a 16-25 railcard.

Your ticket is £43.70, a Preston ticket is £46.35

The difference is £2.65. You pay half of that for just the rtn portion. (rounded up or down to the nearest 5p, not sure which)

If they get the wrong price, ask them to check it, as it looks like it's done manually.

I did an off-route excess at Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago, the first attempt was about £20 more than the correct price; he then called someone over to show him how to do it correctly.
