The apparent lack of incident coverage alluded to could be the result of people with mobiles being unable to post in real-time to their timelines on the usual websites: Facebook, Twitter, etc. No doubt that would be the most severe hardship for many!

Im sure someone will correct me if there is mobile reception in the tunnel :)

There is definitely no signal!

I remember some years ago there used to be emergency 121s kept nearby to evacuate people from the tunnel in case of emergency. Is there any contingency like that in place now? (not that this case warranted it of course).

No.

I believe the evacuation plan involves disembarking all passengers from the most appropriate train at the nearest manned station and using that.

Not looking good is it - having trains of 2 + 3 coaches with no corridor connection!

Trains of more than one class 165 unit have run on Chiltern for 28 years. If the length of the Severn Tunnel requires that route to be regarded as a special case, the answer is for the guard always to be in the rear unit when the train departs from the last station before the tunnel.

Although this incident was 2 Class 165's I assume exactly the same issue applies with two 5 car 800's in that you cannot move between the sets.

There is no requirement for GWR Conductors or Train Managers to be in in the rear set of a service through Severn Tunnel.
