Yesterday, my mother and I travelled from Huntingdon, intending to go to Hadley Wood for a dentist's appointment. Due to delays at Stevenage for the connecting service to Welwyn Garden City, this meant we could not take the service taking us to Hadley Wood before 9am.

We originally were supposed to be at Hadley Wood at 08:46, and we waited for the next service which was supposed to arrive at 09:14 at Hadley Wood. Sadly, this was cancelled and we decided to reschedule the appointment for a later date. We took the next train to central London after that, which skipped Hadley Wood, as we had tickets to London Thameslink (my mother has a weekly season).

Are we eligible for Delay Repay? And if so, how much?

According to Real Time Trains the 0902 from WGC to Hadley Wood was not cancelled but ran 10 minutes late. So if you had completed your intended journey you would have arrived 40 minutes late.

You could try a claim on that basis, disregarding your other actions.

You would have been entitled abandon your journey at Welwyn Garden City, return to Huntingdon and claim full refund.

Sorry, I used the Expected timings before the train was cancelled. The 08:36 was initially delayed, then cancelled.

If I was to wait for the next service to Hadley Wood, I'd have arrived at 09:26. 40 minutes later.

Would it be fine to put down Hadley Wood if I abandoned that leg due to the cancellation?

I think you and you mother should submit separate but similar claims as if you had boarded the 0902 and arrived at Hadley Wood 40 minutes late.
Set out the intended itinerary and the actual clearly on an e-mail.

The TOC may be puzzled by the fact you held a ticket to London Thameslink. As long as it was valid for break of journey, it shouldn’t be an issue. If it was not so valid, I would advise against claiming. Not such a puzzle regarding the season ticket holder.

Thank you, we will do so.

Hadley Wood is an intermediate station, so I believe break of journey is allowed.

Break of journey outbound does depend on the ticket but at that time you must have been on an Anytime single/return, on which it is

It is, but it will possibly be flagged as a complex claim, so may take longer than usual to process

Claims of this nature may actually cost the TOC more in admin costs than the actual compensation paid out.

I decided that posting the full claim would be too much trouble and would likely get us less compensation than a usual claim.

So, we both claimed for the Huntingdon to Welwyn Garden City leg instead of the full route.

That journey was only delayed by 20 minutes, so the compensation will be less than if you had claimed for the entire intended journey to Haddley Wood, which was delayed by 40 minutes. I wish you the best of luck.

Agreed, I'd recommend claiming until Hadley Wood.

As I said before, you need to have set out very clearly the intended journey, and the actual timings.

It was your intention to arrive at Hadley Wood at 8.46, but you missed the connection due to the late running service from Stevenage, and the delayed 0902 from WGC didn't get to Hadley Wood until 0926.

i'm afraid that as you have a claim in their system, things may become difficult, as you have told them your journey was to WGC, and to change your mind now will seem suspicious. You may have to put this one down to experience.

I'm slightly concerned by the suggestions of "Claim as if you had..." Delay repay (or other compensation claims) should be based on what actually happened, rather than what could have occurred.

I wrote in the further details that I had intended to do Huntingdon to Hadley Wood but due to a cancellation, I couldn't make it in time for my appointment and abandoned that leg.

This is a rather complicated case, though, as I used my ticket to the fullest extent. Once I knew that I wouldn't make it, I just hopped onto the next fast Kings Cross service and changed over at St Pancras to get to Farringdon for work. I think I'd likely get something if I just abandoned it to Welwyn Garden City and came back to Huntingdon, but since I used the full ticket, I'm not sure if I'd get any compensation for this situation.

Which is fine, since that's what actually happened. And I think you are entitled to some compensation since the cancellation meant that your original journey no longer had any point. At the very least you should get the difference between the Anytime ticket that you purchased and the Off-Peak ticket that you could have used for the journey that you actually made.

Sounds fair. I agree.

If I didn't go to the dentist's appointment, I'd have left Huntingdon at my usual time, after 9am, to go to work.
