In the absence of a response I can only presume bussnapperwm is referring to changes in the Wombourne, Swindon and Himley areas of South Staffordshire district which NXWM included in its West Dudley Consultation earlier in the summer and which caused local press headlines and obligatory photos of grumpy people at bus stops.

That's the one. Staffordshire County Council have put on their website that the WN4 is getting extended to Wombourne with the 16 getting diverted to serve the current 15 route.
Funny thing is that the 16 would have been ideal for me later this year as it would run earlier than the Himley bonfire shuttles

See, it's not just me being negative, everyone thinks the buses in Stoke are rubbish!

Buses in Stoke-on-Trent do not run late enough into the evening, offer an unpredictable service and are too expensive to use, passengers have told the BBC. So, how bad is it, and what can be done?

As part of the BBC's We Are Stoke-on-Trent project, residents have been speaking about the issues that matter to them, and one issue that keeps coming up is those single and double-deckers.

Some passengers say they have regular problems getting to work and college on time, while others say reduced services make them feel isolated. Waiting all day for a bus and two turning up at once seems to be the least of the difficulties.

The people having the problems

For 17-year-old college student Grace Smith, the services are not fit for purpose and cost "an arm and a leg".

Her mum, Claire, pays for her weekly bus pass which costs £15, and also covers an additional, daily charge of £4.40 as the teenager relies on two different providers for the two legs of her journey to Stoke-on-Trent College from her home in Cheddleton. It amounts to a total monthly charge of about £140.

On top of that, Miss Smith says the journey can sometimes take up to two hours - despite only living about 10 miles away.

Stephanie Mountford, 58, works at a Sainsbury's in the city and often cannot get a bus back to her home in Norton Green, even if she finishes at 17:30.

"It's just useless," she said.

Other passengers say they have seen services stopped entirely.

Adrian Tooth, 49, a course leader at Staffordshire University, used to catch the number 21 bus from Trentham to Hanley to go out on Tuesday evenings.

"The service was stopped out of the blue and people were just stripped of their independence," he said.

John Housley, 71, a joiner from the Staffordshire Moorlands, had a similar experience.

He said: "In the last two years I've seen the last bus from Leek go from being 22:30 to 19:30.

"It makes going out in an evening pointless - by the time you get there you've got to catch the last bus back."

What do passengers want?
Passengers say they want to see more coordinated services for different groups of users.

Grace Smith says there should be more support for young people through the restoration of the under-18 bus pass. It was scrapped by Staffordshire County Council over the summer.

The authority said the decision was due to an 80% drop in the uptake of passes since 2014/15.

Mr Tooth said operators should consider the impact of services on older people, while Mrs Mountford said she would like services to be run better for commuters.

Darren Shirley, chief executive of Campaign for Better Transport, says the government needs to create a national strategy to ensure communities such as those in Stoke-on-Trent are not left disconnected.

What do the bus companies say?
Bus services in Stoke-on-Trent are delivered by three operators.

One of the companies, D&G, says it recognises cutting back a service can prompt a "vicious cycle" of putting people off travelling, which may "lead to further journeys being withdrawn over time".

Operator First Potteries says its services are frequent, flexible and "90% run on time". It recently announced a raft of changes to its services, due to come into force from 29 September.

The BBC has approached the third operator, Arriva, for comment.

A Stoke-on-Trent City Council spokesperson says the authority is "in the process of creating a plan to deliver a better public transport provision, working with bus operators".

This article was created as part of We are Stoke-on-Trent, a BBC project with the people of the city to tell us the stories which matter to them.
No progress yet on 'taking control over bus routes and fares' promised in the local elections earlier this year!

Don't think anyone would disagree that cutting evening services is a retrograde step but as Staffordshire CC pointed out (in an FOI request) that they cut the subsidies and they also get to cut ENCTS remuneration so its a double win.

Bus companies will take a holistic view on supporting services so as not to affect revenue on commercial journeys but sometimes, you can't even justify that.

No announcement by Midland Classic as to their service changes on the 27th October. Nothing on Derbyshire County Council regarding new timetables nor on traveline yet. Leaving it a bit late in the day aren't they?

It is mentioned in the Derbyshire bus timetable library - I wondered if Midland Classic were waiting for some possible funding affecting other changes from the same date?

As frequently the case no sign of last Friday's Notices and Proceedings so no help there.

The news section on the Derbyshire web site seems to have fallen into disuse. There are a number of changes, listed in the timetable library (some available, some not) yet there is no mention of the same changes in the news and notices section. Still better than Staffordshire though, at least they produce legible timetables instead of the messy auto-generated reports from travel-line.

First The Potteries prices to change from 17th November.
Most ticket prices increased.
Many Network tickets eliminated. Replaced by route specific tickets at a higher price but with less validity! Why pay £7.50 for a ticket from Leek on route 18 which also includes unlimited travel within the Potteries, when you can pay £7.00 for The Knot, get a greater area of validity and you can come back via the 'competing' operator (D & G route 16), whichever is most convenient?
If you travel to/from the wider Network area your choice is now a route specific day ticket, a continuous monthly direct debit to your smart phone or an annual ticket - no weekly* or non-DD monthly options - not sure about 3 month tickets remaining.

Minor alterations to route 6 (to serve Parkhall) WOW only a 55 minute journey from Parkhall to Hanley (when it would be about 20-25 minutes direct!).
Minor alterations to the 72/72A times.

*Edit: route specific weekly tickets will be available in the Network area.

It's like they are trying to run down Stoke and Newcastle operations. Charging high prices to run down the routes.

They certainly seem to be intent on killing off the longer distance routes - not that they have many left anyway.
1) Too much effort for the controllers to keep track of buses more than a few minutes beyond their desk.
2) Too difficult for them to turn buses early when a route is 90 minutes each way.
3) Best to keep the Pot Herbs within their own area anyway. Prevents contamination of other areas.

Are there are any controllers other than at Hanley bus station ?
Not sure they bother turning buses anyway.

Controllers - only at Hanley as far as I know, sometimes they venture onto the public concourse (before scurrying back inside after the amount of stick they receive from punters). They can, of course, track and communicate with buses via whatever runs behind the Ticketer machines. The other week I got, in addition to my normal ticket, a ticket printout detailing the problems the depot engineer was having with his mobile phone and which alternative number to use!

They do turn short, or rather they arrive late at Blythe Bridge (6A) then run back private along the A50 to Meir or Longton, thus leaving some passengers (ie me), waiting even longer but making up time for the remainder of the route. Similarly, when two buses on the same route arrive at Hanley very close together, the late running one will be sent out private to wherever whilst everyone has to board the second bus and wait for it to depart on time.

The route specific ticket change has been withdrawn following "feedback", according to the First website - I'm not familiar with current tickets, so not sure what other changes are still going ahead (if any)

Timetable changes to the following D & G services from 15 December:
11/11B, 16/16A, 32/32X, 40 and 85/85A.
Picked these up from N & P, I have no further information than this.

Rumoured changes to First Potteries services come January. Mice pies didn't divulge much detail!

The 'on-bus' Network day, week and month tickets have been retained. Single cash and m-ticket fares have increased. Differential pricing on Potteries Day m-ticket compared to 'on-bus' has been removed.

Cue the usual complaints about Ray Stenning. I’m sure the good people of Leek will be chuntering into their lattes, complaining that their new livery is a bit similar to one in Haltwhistle......

Looks like it’s had an internal refurb too

Yes, that's one of the changes, more route branding. Something similar for the 101 as well, can't remember about the 3.

I think they'd prefer a bus service before a paint job. Last bus to Leek at 1855. Not much time to drink that latte with a last bus back at 1844.

Too little demand nowadays for services much after 6pm unless they are serving largely urban areas.

Have the Kingfisher vehicles been internally referbished as they did look quite worn last time I went on the 32 two years ago.

It's nice seeing some rebranding. I'm not sure how it will work with the 3 as some journeys link with the 4 don't they?

Staffordshire bus change page suggest the D&G changes are just timeing point changes.

Changes to services in and around the Potteries from 12 January.

First: various routes, no details published, just the usual vague one-liner on Staffordshire County Council website. No mention yet on First The Potteries.
D & G: 32/32X - deviation via Kingsley withdrawn. Timetable on their website.

Details of First in the Potteries changes available via WM Traveline. Seem to be mostly tinkering rather than anything radical.

The changes to the Wolverhampton-Wombourne-Stourbridge/Merry Hill services were published on the NC website on the 20th. https://nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands/i...ampton-service-changes-from-26th-january-2020

The 4 will run Pendeford-Wolverhampton only.
The 15 will run the route of the 4 through Bradmore/Warstones instead of down the Penn Road then onto Wombourne, Himley, and current route (a 15A will bypass Wombourne)
The 16 will run down the Penn Road to Wombourne then into Swindon instead of Himley.

The frequency of the 15 and 16 is to be increased, great for those Wombourne and beyond but it is a drop of frequency in daytime along the Penn Road by the looks of it. Looks like some evening services will only run to Spring Hill.

An interesting result is that two places both called Merry Hill will be connected for the first time by the 15.
