Services affected due to an incident involving a Gillingham (Dorset) to London service earlier today. Several platforms closed and delays to trains in and out of the station. Not sure of the exact details of the incident.

The National Rail Enquiries service disruption page has the following:
A problem under investigation at London Waterloo, has resulted in some lines and platforms being blocked. Disruption is expected until 21:00.
https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/233923.aspx

Ticket acceptance is in place with other operators. Someone did ask on Twitter if it covered the Gold Card weekend tickets but they didn't get a response as of yet.

I assume it would but not sure if I'd attempt to fund out

Back to normal running at Waterloo as of around 40 minutes ago I believe, although still some residual delays. Some disruption expected into the evening peak.

Originally it was a suspected derailment however it's supposedly a fault with the suspension on one of the units which has caused a brake application outside of platform 9.

You'll find a photo below;
https://twitter.com/londonwaterloo/status/1187685376825143298?s=21

Good photo, believe the shifting of carriage 4 (it was 2-159) caused a loss of either air or electrical continuity, hence the emergency brake application.

RAIB required the train not be moved until they attended.

Unfortunately, it knocked out the UMF and DMF and platforms 6-13 at Waterloo....

Not a good day for travel from or to London termini with Euston services affected by a trespasser up a signal at Wembley.

That's what ticket acceptance is. The acceptance of one operator's tickets by other operators

Never a good day to travel with SWR lately. It’s a franchise that seems to suffer from infrastructure problems, train failures and all the other problems that go with running a train service on an all to often regularity.

infrastructure has got nothing to do with SWR that’s down to network rail.
Don’t see to many train failure on SWR either

Agree. Modern Railways has the 'new trains' TINs (technical delay stuff) and SWR does well - as ever, the same staff as per the previous franchise doing the same job very well. On assorted threads there is always sniping at various TOCs - SWR are well there in the sights. Why? Staff much the same, Managers, ditto, top guys - they are the ones who want it to do well. Profit margins for TOCs (available on other threads) are not exactly great. I was going to continue a mini-rant but have stepped back!

Plus problems with London Overground from Clapham towards Stratford due to a trespasser.

And having been to my concert at Shepherds Bush I get back to Clapham Junction and find platform 13 shut and all services departing from 15-seems someone was hit by a train at Battersea Park. Not a good day for the railways all round really.

Trespassers would go to prison for ten years if I had my way.

Most of these treasspssers aren't just taking a shortcut from a to b.

Many are a 'concern for welfare' meaning that for whatever reason they aren't in a good place mentally and possibly suicidal.

What they need is the help of mental health service practitioners not a prison sentence.

With others, their normal rational thinking is impaired due to the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It does seem there was a high amount of trespassing yesterday. Way more than usual.

East Ham on the District Line, Woolwich Arsenal on southeastern, Preston Park for a little while on the BML, Battersea Park (person hit by train) and finally the Euston one which managed to get on BBC News.

Are they becoming more common?

Why? There are far worse crimes with much more detrimental effects on others than trespassing on a railway line. Also, although the facts are reported to the public rather 'euphemistically' in these circumstances, as a Driver I can tell you a large proportion of these involve vulnerable/suicidal people.

The problem why we have got to this situation is that because of social media - people not thinking about what they are posting about other people before they do so, and the receiver taking everything that they read as gospel truth and also a society where everything is wanted now, so there are far too many people that cannot cope with life.
So they walk off platforms in the hope that they are hit by a train to end it all.
The only way to solve this is to switch off all social media platforms permanently (twenty years ago we managed without them so we should be able to do so now) and for people to grow up and live a proper life where they actually talk to people face to face, no staring at their mobile device all their waking hours.
The trespassers ought to be sent the bill for the disruption they cause, far better than prison.

There was also a trespass incident in the early evening yesterday north of Oxford on the Banbury line.

Social media is a cesspit but people have always jumped in front of trains.

Social media is a cesspit but people have always jumped in front of trains.

Unfortunately it does attract keyboard warriors who say things to people they wouldn't dream of doing face to face and it can mobilise people into unattractive groups.

However, there is a lot of good that can come out of it and it has also empowered people to get real time answers from corporations and people in positions of power.

"Social Media" in and if itself isn't the problem,it's the minority of people who abuse it.

Bit of a over reaction, and what good would sending a bill to someone who's desperate and considering taking their own life,. A multi thousand pound bill from network rail is really going to help things.......

A news feature earlier on BBC - a West Midlands 'Outside Source' (or similar) on 231 channel - anyway, more to do with teenage trespass - schoolchildren basically. Doubled recently - nothing to do with 'health' issues - doing it because they could, taking a 'short cut' via platforms to get home quicker - replete with school uniform and, what I would have called, satchels. I agree that other instances do have people who are 'troubled' - bullying etc. - these are those who quite often fulfil their intention. In many cases their 'help' should come from home - if the family is 'screwed' then they have little chance and are too young to know where to turn to. School as a sounding point? Perhaps - hopefully. Social media does not help - it could on occasion swing someone the better way (not do something silly) or the worst way. Enough anyway.

Pot, meet kettle.

Really don't think that is fair, you only need to look at a lot of the insulting posts made on here to know that people say things on line that they would never say face to face.

Something has to be done to reverse the trend however or we will have no service reliable enough to use in a few years.

As the incident has passed and was not a trespass incident this thread has run its course
