Today at Peterborough I saw two short Azuma sets in tandem at about 1205 and another pair at 1225 both southbound. What's that about?

Er, it’s how LNER provide 10 car trains formed of 2 x 5 cars, just like GWR have been doing on their routes since they introduced their fleet, or is this a catch question?

I think the eventual plan is for most Leeds services to be formed 2x5 car sets to allow one portion to run onwards from Leeds to Harrogate or Bradford when the regular 2 hourly services start to these locations. A 5 car set returning from Harrogate or Bradford will then couple onto the remaining portion at Leeds to return south.

9 cars will be concentrated mainly on the Anglo-Scottish services.

Thank you for a very helpful and illuminating answer.

Currently four pairs diagrammed on Leeds to Kings Cross workings each day which has allowed 9-cars to work Anglo-Scottish services.

I believe the specific question has been answered. We have other long running threads where more general points about the employment of these sets have been covered at great length previously.
