I'm planning to visit Lake Garda in Italy next so looking to travel by train to Peschiera del Garda.

Has anyone here got any recommendations for the route to take and where to stay on the way there and back?

Easiest way I think, is London - Brussels - Frankfurt - Munich then take the overnight sleeper to Peschiera.

Or you could travel Via Paris, Switzerland and Milan.

We did it as a family on the Paris to Verona overnight and picked a hire car up in of all places, Verona Airport as it was way cheaper than picking it up in the town. If you are not getting a car just change at Verona for a local train back to Peschiera. We were closer to Desenzano so drove there to park for a number of day trips including Milano.

The overnight offers you the choice of couchettes or sleepers with varying prices available to determine how many people you share with . .

However you get there, enjoy!

https://www.seat61.com/ will give you the options.
I would certainly consider the Bernina option, but bear in mind that overnighting in Switzerland is expensive.
Are you travelling solo? How far from St Pancras or Harwich will you be starting? How much time do you have to spare en route?

Thanks for the pointers. I don't yet know if I'll be going alone or with one other person. I am in Basingstoke so will most likely begin at St Pancras. Trip is for next summer so plenty of time to plan and work out where to stop.

I stayed at this hotel in Filisur last year. It is at the end of the station platform - the Bernina and Glacier Express trains stop there.
The track was outside my bedroom window.

I stayed 3 nights - the first day I got the train to Davos and St Moritz. Day 2 I caught the Bernina train to Tirano & return. Last morning I caught the Glacier express service through to Brig & changed onto a service to Basel, ending up in Strasbourg that evening.

That's the kind of place I was thinking about.
Been on my little list for years - but I still call EUR140 for a double pricey, and you can't IME do much cheaper in CH.

Back to the OP: if time is short, then I'd go overnight one may, but otherwise I would go for stopovers. Dijon perhaps, or Besancon (and then the branch line to Le Locle, if that doesn't mean an extra stop), and via the Simplon route to Milan.

Or Strasbourg/Colmar and then through Switzerland to Milan.

The above recommendations seem overly complex. This journey can be done really easily;

London-Paris-Milan-Garda. It could be done with just a one night stay in Milan or Paris-Milan on the sleeper.

It does depend what you're after; a reasonable journey, a European Tour or to ride on as many trains/networks/sleepers as you can while getting there?

I took it that the OP wasn't after getting there as quickly as possible but wanted an interesting stopover or even two. Milan of course qualifies, but you'd need 2 nights to do it justice not 1.
