Not withstanding HS1, which is kind of like a closed, seperate railway, I was thinking something earlier. There's a temporary speed restriction between Tamworth and Elford in the Up direction due to a slipping embankment. Linespeed is 125mph, the TSR is 5mph. 5mph is the slowest TSR board available, so this must at the worst be the equal most severe TSR on the network. Any thoughts?

When i saw the title i immediately cast my mind back to a journey on a Super Voyager travelling Glasgow bound north of Carlisle a little while after passing Lockerbie, when we rather forcefully slowed from 125mph to an almost halt, before I spotted a TSR board for a 5mph TSR.
I believe it was in the Wamphray area on the northbound track, although I don't know the reason why. I saw a disused looking building with the location on it, which leads me to believe it was at Wamphray.

although i concur that 5 mph is indeed probley the most restrictive i have once seen a 3mph board on the southern region, although it looked more like a thirty board with the 0 removed.
I once saw a 1.25 mph sign. though it may have been 125 with a bit of dirt on it...

They had badgers between Nantwich and Crewe a few years back, they could only relocate them after the breeding season apparently, there was a 20mph slack for 7 months on the line.
One of my brothers drives trains in another country and he always gets foxes on the line!
He says they freeze and start shaking with their tails btwn legs, like dogs and he has to nearly stop.
On several occasions he has gotten deer on his tracks and they just looks at him.
He says he has to stop. There is no way to be heartless and drive on!
I can understand why trains can be late in terms of being kind and not nasty to animals - after all; we are mammals and can be considered as two legged rats!!

If you can stop a train doing 100mph+ in the distance it takes till you spot a badger, good luck to you. It's more about the badger's home, not about them being on the track, it would make no sense if they made Derby trains do 5mph and Birmingham ones can do 125mph when applicable, when they're all but 6 foot apart.

Badgers can only be relocated with the advisement of DEFRA or whatever it is called now.
They may insist on netting the embankment or ground area to prevent further burrowing. Then at a later date when young have left the nest one way gates can be installed preventing them getting back in the sett.
An alternative sett may need to be provided made up of pipe sections or a disused embankment nearby may suffice.
This is what we had to provide for a sett near Filey that was causing a dip to appear in the track on the Hull - Scarborough line. They had tunnelled right through the doubletrack embankment. This took 9 month from start to finish.
Near York another sett was treated as above with net and gates then sealed by pumping 20 cubes of grout into the sett to prevent reentry.
The following year the badgers moved back in 20 yards up the line.
The boss wasn't to pleased.

Unfortunatley killing wildlife as part & parcel of driving trains. Stopping is not usually an option as foxes & deer tend to dart out & are very random. We would never arrive on time if you slowed down everytime you spotted them & you never no what the daft animal will do anyway. Shenfield to Brentwood is often used by badgers as a 'run' & it is often like a scene from a video nasty.
As for TSRs, even though not too severe as 60 instead of 100, Stowmarket 'up' has been on for nearly 25 years due to visibility of a foot crossing. The towns new relief road & bridge should spell the closure of it & a return to line speed. Will seem very strange.

My understanding was that deer were regarded as a danger to trains if on or near the track. G1 requires all staff to report to the signaller anything that might endanger a train, including floods, track defects, an obstruction, a cow, bull or other large animal within the boundary fence or any animal on the tracks. I would assume a deer would be a large animal, especially stags. I think peope have been killed by the antlers of stags when they hit stags in a car. The rule book takes it very seriously. The next page of the rulebook gives how to stop a train in an emergency, and instructs anyone seeing a danger to trains to do anything possible to stop trains.

A TSR beyond 6 months should be turned into a PSR unfortunately there is now a whole series of legal steps to be taken for that to be the case.

Yeah but then it becomes an almighty pain in the backside to remove. I can even tell you that a PSR that shew EMU 90 took over 2 years & endless nonsense to change to MU 90 in 2004 as at the time it was put up (1989) the max DMU speed was 75 with 156s.

The amusing part of all these historic PSRs is that when people come to look at raising them no one knows why they are there and why they couldnt have been raised earlier....

There's a couple around Scunthorpe then that should be PSRs (Jordy should know about these restrictions) ....
Scunthorpe platform 1 has a permanent TSR (has been there for about 4 or 5 years now, as well as Keadby Bridge (next to Althorpe station). That restriction has been there for a lot longer.
Any particular reason these TSRs are in place for so long?
