Now Merseytravel are using standard rail tickets for Saveaways is it possible to buy one online from a normal train ticket provider website opposed to having to buy them in batches of 10 directly from Merseytravel?

Incidentally, the only reason you ever 'had' to get them in batches of 10 is for frequent users to get a discount - most people still buy them individually.
You can also buy 10 or more Saveaways by post from Hub Support, 24 Hatton Garden, Liverpool L3 2AN. Send details of which Saveaways you
need, along with payment (cheque payable to Merseytravel with cheque card number and name and address entered on the back, or credit/debit card number with issue number and expiry date). We shall send your tickets out within three days.
No.
It's not Merseytravel using orange ticket stock it's MerseyRAIL; if you buy them from bus stations or corner shops you still get the scratch-off ones. Also, AFAIK, it's only Merseyrail (and ATW in the case of Chester) stations that can issue them; you can't, for example, buy one at Euston for use on arrival. Similarly with local rail season tickets, the text on which has to be entered manually (zones, etc.).

Just wondering:
1) The old, scratch card versions, are they being used up until gone or just dumped straight away?
2) How long can you keep a scratch card type before it becomes invalid? Guessing this will be until the last possible date you can scratch off on the ticket, unless they've brought this forward?
They will be valid until the last date that can be scratched off, which in most cases currently is the end of 2010. However, more will soon be printed and they will continue to be issued for a considerable period of time. Unless every bus station and corner shop in Merseyside is issued with a rail ticketing machine (and staff given appropriate training in rail ticket issue) there will still be a need for the old-style tickets.
[...]Effectively, any outlet that sells rovers/rangers can sell you a Saveaway.
What is this? Is it the paper tickets ME RPIs (and some XC guards) use or something else?RSP4407/8 stock

Well I didn't know that: thank you for correcting my ignorance. Is there a guide to use attached to it though? I mean, and forgive me if I'm wrong again, I'd have considered it unlikely that a guard on the Highland Line or station clerk in Evesham will know that Liverpool is zone C and Sefton zone D, so how do they know which to issue?

Guards can only issue what the passenger asks for. The guard/retailer could check the Fares Manual though which has full mapping details.
All TOCs have 'excess pads' known as RSP 4407/4408. On Merseyrail, the RPIs do carry these for tickets. However, most booking offices/conductors nationwide stock them for in the event of a machine fail. Scotrail Sleeper staff always use them to issue Berth Supplements upon.
A question that even I don't know:
If I hold an 'area C' one day ranger, is it permitted to excess to an 'all zones' ranger?
I've never heard of getting excess fares for rangers/rovers...
No local instructions have been issued, and the STAR system couldn't handle such an excess.
