Brighouse-Edinburgh 6th April, Return 7th

Hi, just looking into this speculatively for now, but could anyone find the cheapest way to do this journey. Arrive Edinburgh early afternoon on the 6th, leave same time on the 7th. Tried various techniques (splitting at York/Newcastle/Preston (via Manchester) etc, but cheapest I can get is around £75.

2 adults 1 child, with a family railcard.

Had a quick look and the cheapest I can get via Leeds is nearly £100. What tickets did you find for £75?

I have the discounted fare as £123.45 for a walk-up off-peak return ticket(s) for two adults and one child aged 5-15 travelling together on a Family Railcard.

Splitting tickets at Carlisle would reduce the cost to £120.70.

To get much cheaper than that, you'd probably have to consider advance tickets and restrict yourselves to specific trains, which probably wouldn't be mid-afternoon on the dates in question.

Couldn't find any advance tickets for the return journey on EC.

I think to get cheap tickets on EC over Easter, you are looking 2 months too late!

Total cost £86.65.

If either of the adults is over 55, please tell us. There are good Club 55 offers for parts of this journey.

The £13.60 advance was £9.85 last night, and I forgot to add the cost of a Brighouse-Huddersfield return on it, hence the lower price. It was only short notice, my mum was looking at going up to Edinburgh for a day, but I don't think we will be going looking at those prices , or if we do, it will be in the car!

Think that is the cheapest to get them, plus it's a very bad time to travel as most if not all of the East Coast and other advance tickets will have gone ages ago. The cheapest theoretical price you could get it would be £44.20 return, EC and Connections but you'd have to book well in advance for that.

Even better, going by Virgin on the WCML you could get it as cheap as £33.20.

The cost of going by car will probably be about £85 so about the same as the train. That's assuming that the driver's time is worth nothing, and assuming that there is no time saving (or assigning the time saving value as nil if there is any) and assuming that the extra productivity of being in a train is worth nothing too.
