love them too, they are along with the 165's one of my favourite classes. And I love the sound of the perkins diesels compared to the cummins units on other 2nd gen units.

Chiltern's 165s have a much higher standard than FGW's.

It will be interesting to see if FGW do a good job with the 165 refurbishment.

Speaking of that, has anyone got any pictures of a refurbished unit yet?

I hate the 166s - well, perhaps hate is too strong a word...I certainly dislike them.

Much of this is to do with their poor state, in dire need of refurbishment.

However, I'm no fan of the trains themselves. They're noisy and slow, quite uncomfortable (2+3 seating never great...), often smell a bit 'toilety' and the air-conditioning seems to have a knack of sucking in diesel fumes from outside. :(

And as for when one of them is diagrammed on a fast Oxford/Cotswolds service that should be a HST which I'm planning to take, I absolutely loathe them!

If the refurb brings them a little closer to Chiltern's 165s, it will be a big improvement though.

I'd hope they've changed the carpet in first class as well, and had a good look at the dodgy window openers (that'll be most of them). At one of the recent "meet the managers" sessions I was promised a "whole new travelling environment". We'll see.

I avoid the FGW ones wherever possible, they're not very nice units to travel on IMO. The Chiltern ones are okay though.

Prefer 165s, at least you have the ability to control the temperature to a greater extent than 166 with their shocking aircon.

They should be ok after refurb, its amazing what painting everything blue/lilac and new seat covers can do.

Does anyone know why Turbos always smell of stale urine?

Before Chiltern refurbished them they always did, and all of FGWs ones do too.

The urine point is an excellent one. I usually go first class, so I tend to escape the urine smell. But still, the toilets and aircon must be inexplicably linked or something.

This is what I feel about them, I,m sick of FGW replacing the HST services on Sunday with them! and they are piles of crap on wheels

Hope you enjoyed your trip!

I have to say I have travelled on the FGW and have not noticed the them smelling of urine. I prefer the Chiltern units there a vast improvement over the FGW ones.

But as I love all the units in the 'Networker' family yes I do like them. :)

i have always blamed the urine smell on the passenger rather than the train. The same smell occurs on the sister 465 networkers on southeastern. Particularly back in connex days the units took a harsh beating from their passengers, with most of them dripping with graffiti inside and out, all windows so badly scratched that you could not see out and damaged seats....and then there was the sticky floors (perhaps linked to an unpleasant smell).

The reason you have turbos on padd oxford etc we dont have enough drivers on the ltv side to cover the work, engineering contributes to this as well on the hss speed services.

Ive driven the fleet since 1995 and they are probably the most reliable unit of all dmus, most of the refurb work is being done inside, 165109 an 16120 have been done 109 wont be out for months due to one power car in the works

cheers

I wonder if it's maybe some of the adhesives used to put them together or something, as it seems to affect the non-toilet cars too.

It doesn't actually smell like urine to me, just 'peculiar'. I remember travelling on a turbo for the first time in five years or so last year. The first thing I said to my partner was 'wow - they still smell like they did in 1993!'

The second thought that struck me is how much I'd like a row of the seats for my living room. For some reason, the moment I sit in one, I feel like I have a new back :)

I didnt think HSTs were on the Padd to oxford service in the first place.
I,m talking about the great Malvern service.

Originally, of course it was two different companies- FGW ran the HSTs, Thames Trains ran the turbos. If a service was run by TT, it was a turbo. The "old" FGW never ran services as short distance as the Oxford ones. Many of the Cotswold line trains were Thames as well. The HSTs on Oxfords is a relatively new thing.

And before that wasn't it run by one company?

Albeit two different divisions.

Before First Great Western there was one HST per day to Hereford, nothing more, nothing less.

I also remember some Turbos running services by "First Great Western" as indicated by the bottom line on the destination display. Who ran the Bristol to Oxford trains?
