My idea for a Tram for Glasgow

Edinburgh has one and even if it is a pricey thing to create surely there are benefits to having one considering there is an over growing case to reduce congestion and emissions whilst improving on the transport infrastructure within scotland and especially the lack luster transport in glasgow

If so where would the trams be best to start and finish whilst not being a nuisance to residence with the noise of the trams tracks?

Wouldn't have a tram network here in a million years. Congestion is a massive problem as it is and would only get worse with trams thrown into the mix too. An improved, slightly cheaper bus network is a better option than trams

They are busy most of the time, especially at the weekend in edinburgh, ingleston P&R is a popular place at the weekend, on that basis I would say it's a hard argument not to have some sort of tram or metro network.

Personally I say sod the motorists, if they feel that coming into the city centre is necessary then ok, but you should have to suffer the congestion on top of a congestion charge, perhaps even glasgow city council being very serious that motorist get completely banned from certain city centre areas/streets, as said much of these motorists will have access to public transport and could leave the car at home many a times, especially at the weekend.

They should never have shut the brilliant tram network Glasgow had in the 50s/60s. All too late now.

Yeah that could definitely work. Problem is that most people don't trust public transport at all here so would probably just go shopping elsewhere

Thats just the issue as well, our government despite there rationalising that congestion needs reducing there is still no real effort to essentially putting an end to car use in our cities or to at least dissuade many going a galvant to Braehead or the Fort by car, its simply an inevitable car-addicted-anti-bus desease that society has on itself and the government share part of the blame.

Absolutely every new supermarket, retail park, many work places, residential New build(in the city) has vast amounts of car parking.

People may not like it and neither will councillors be fond of the idea but eventually drastic change will come.

City centre is screwed tbh either way. I think rents need to come down massively for new shops to even last now and improvements definitely need made on a lot of things. If park and ride schemes were built and bus fares were capped out at even £1.70 some people might come back to public transport but the trust needs to be built over time and First and Mcgills aren't making that any easier as it is

Glasgow has a massive advantage in doing this: the M8. Put a massive multi-storey car park at each exit, and bus gate the roads past them into the city centre. It's then really easy to drive to the city centre, but almost impossible to drive into it. The city centre is then walkable from the car parks for most people. Most of the natural City Centre access points sit astride bus routes anyway, so existing bus services could easily take passengers unable or unwilling to walk.

With the cars removed from the City Centre bus services can become more reliable. The other thing that would make a huge difference would be replacing the car parking down both sides of our lovely wide streets with proper cycle tracks. This could be done quite easily in most places, except for Great Western Road.

There's a screaming need for something to take the through road traffic between Clydebank or so and the M8 off of Great Western Road. That longer-distance traffic to and from places beyond Glasgow isn't going away any time soon, and keeping it on city streets both slows it down and causes problems for local traffic.

Trams are lovely, but they'd be a long way down my list of ways to improve transport in Glasgow. Ironically, I think someone in the Council actually has a pretty good idea of what needs doing. There has been a lot of sense come out of them lately. It just takes a long time for them to translate good ideas into action.

Agree that Glasgow's suburban rail network makes them unnecessary, but strongly disagree with your comment about Edinburgh. I love the trams and use them regularly.

We need get rid of the buses and/or rebuild the rail network that was removed in the 60s.
