I know this crossing well- I live just the other side of Wokingham. It is a fully barriered and lit crossing.

What's interesting is that the other crossing in the town has been shut as well- I wonder if this is not as cut and dry as a driver not obeying lights?

I'll be interesting to see how this develops.

Waterloo crossing is AHB. The next crossing going towards Wokingham, Star Lane Crossing, was AHB until a few years ago when it was upgraded to full barrier CCTV control.

I wonder if the new radio advert regarding 460 vans etc has an infuence on anyones descision to use a train for a suicide?

The collision happened at the unmanned crossing just yards from Ludgrove School, the prep school that Princes William and Harry both attended as children.

Only the Daily Mail could say that as if it had anything to do with it!

What a wreckage, the Vauxhall Corsa (1996 or 1998 one by the looks of it?) was no match for the Class 458 'Juniper' by the looks of the pictures the unit didn't appear to be damaged either.

My sympathy is with the driver at the moment. And hope hes ok.

Car vs Train nearly always end Train 1 - Car 0. Even a "light" unit can weight 30 or 40 times what a car weighs, and they will hit the car around the level of the coupling, which has always been designed to take heavy loads. Lorry or Bus vs Car usually doesn't hurt the lorry or bus either, and they are a lot lighter than trains. The only problem is things getting under the wheels causing derailment, although even then it's rarely that serious. Major accidents only usually occur when the train derails and then hits some points, in fact most serious derailments involve points.
