Oh good. One that I can actually do without having to go very far. Whoop-de-do. Not. Um, anyway, can anyone explain why first attempt - POTW 408 - was so blurry please? Was it because the resolution wasn't set properly? Because even if I alter the settings, the smallest I can get is 1280x960.

Did you use the flash? At night some cameras flick into 'night mode' like mine did on my attempt meaning the slightest movement produces a hell of a lot of blur as the shutter speed is much slower - which if you haven't got a tripod is pretty much inevitable. Resolution doesn't really matter as you can resize it using Photoshop/Paint.

Hmm, this week's not half bad, problem is the 'good' 15x units are in Yorkshire and I'm pretty strapped for cash now :|

Having looked at the shot, it's due to there being insufficient light for a handheld shot. The less light there is, the longer the shutter needs to remain open, and the more handshake can affect a photo. You'd need a tripod for night shots like that, I would have probably had a shutter opening of eight seconds, in comparison, a normal bright day shot requires somewhere in the region of a 800th of a second shutter opening. Hope this helps.

Thank you both :D But I really don't fancy buying a tripod just for that. I'll just use a wall, or something...

Tripods are cheap enough and worth every penny to get the right shot.

Whilst inexpensive, it's all about the individuals desire to invest money and effort to their own choosing. Obviously, like in life, you'll get out what you put in. To get a shot of XCs first complete HST set (comissioned by XC), I travelled overnight to Berwick, cycled 15 miles with camera and tripod to location, had that days test run cancelled, cycled back to Berwick to B&B, and found a bus out and back the next day to the same place, for two lineside shots. It was worth all the sweat for the photographic reward, as well as the financial (let's just say I wish it was my day job). For those interested, the Northbound test was the only train in sun for the whole two days. Now as I've spun a fair yarn, and some newer members may not have seen the shots, here is the links to the test run, below:
Southbound (Craigentinny-Newcastle)

The most important thing is to enjoy the photography whilst you do it. Even if I spent two hours trekking up a mountain for a shot, I'd enjoy doing it for the results I get. That's all that matters to me, any payment or publishing somewhere is just a bonus.

I'd like to thank you all for your help on this one. My latest failure has now been submitted, and is probably my best-ever shot of a vehicle of any kind (once upon a time I did some bus photography to help a friend, although I was 14-ish at that time...). Also got a couple of pics of the ATW Bubble :D

EDIT: "Failure" and "Best-Ever Shot"? I'm worried... :?

Its not all about how good yor photo is or about wining as the most Important thing is the taking part.

It's not like you're the only one to ever get 0 votes. It happens all the time, and sometimes to the majority of photos in a potw.

Most of the competitions I've entered I've either got 0 or 1 votes :D

...But the other week you won! So it shows that people shouldn't be put off by getting 0 votes at times!

Aye. And as I said before I think that my 15x shot isn't that bad actually; it was certainly the most careful of the three (along the lines of sitting on a bench and holding still as opposed to jumping around! :D). So I'll take the above as encouragement. I'll win one eventually!

Good luck to all for 410 (and 409, seen as it's still running!).

I didn't have chance to go out this week but I've got a pretty decent album of 15x, being the bulk of the Northern fleet :)
