Hi everyone, these last couple of days I've travelled on 2 of EMT's meridians, and both units have had terrible diesel fumes in the saloon, to the extent that after almost 2 hours onboard I felt quite bilious. Is this normal for these trains?

I've always found them very smoky too, particularly when idling in the tunnels around Kentish Town area. If there is any air quality monitoring on the ventilation system, it seems too slow to react and stop the exhaust being blown into the saloon.

No one should be able to smell exhaust fumes in these trains. I'd tell EMT about it, they'll say similar. If you tell them after 2 hours you felt bilious they'll be very concerned.

They're ever so slightly more polluting than the similar Voyagers. I've seen both at Derby when at idle which was, however, back in 2017. Probably to do with them having the same horsepower but weighing heavier.

Imagine the old 1950's and 1960's DMU's in the era of then new Pacers and 15x stock being introduced!

Sounds very wrong. I've never smelt fumes on any 222 while inside. Personally I'd get off at the next stop if it was as bad as you say.

I smelt a fair bit of fumes on a TPE 185 going through Totley tunnel. Smelt like an old diesel car!

I doubt they'll care tbh, they don't care about the condition that they send the 222s out in

Not fumes but I was stuck on one from Loughborough a few years ago heading to Nottingham.

It’s was early afternoon during the summer and the heating was full on in the Meridian saloon, about four of us were lucky enough to seek refuge in the vestibule though.

The unit was taken out of service once we reached Nottingham.

A Sprinter must have passed through not long before, as 185s are very clean and any fumes from the exhaust have a very 'clean diesel' smell to them.

There's certainly nothing clean about them. They're a little more sophisticated in the sense that the metered fuel and the fuel used for timing is electronically controlled giving a 'better burn' but it's still an old school diesel with no treatment systems.

The HVACs are designed to go into emergency mode at certain tunnels which may help. It does this by receiving GPS signals in a similar way the engines shut down in ECO mode.

The logic schematics we use even state the locations.

Question to the OP... Are you sure they're diesel fumes? Theres a distinct irritation to the eyes normally.

I ask because there's a common exam task on vehicles with bodyside heaters to remove the grills and clean any filth beneath them periodically. What can happen is the stuff used to do these tasks can make the saloon look as if theres a fog machine on the go when the heater elements get warm. Just a thought...

Have you got any evidence for that?

They are, to be fair, in a right state cosmetically which may give the impressive of lack of care to the casual observer. They've been slowly falling to bits for a while. Broken seats in first class with the bases turned upside down, missing bin covers in the loos, blown window and external door seals, threadbare seat covers and so on do not make a great impression. Hopefully EMR will spend a bit of money on a refresh even if it's only for a few years.

The 185s are particularly noticeable in Standedge Tunnel; going eastbound when you are getting towards the end of the tunnel stretch can notice it usually in the saloon. To be expected when stuck in a confined area and the train cannot receive any 'fresh air'. Not noticed it whilst out of tunnels though on air con stock so a little unusual this.

As a reasonably frequent 222 user, they usually do smell a bit and definitely more diesel and less poop than the Voyagers, but I've never felt it be overwhelming...

If there is a smell you're worried about, might not be bad to check it over with a member of staff when they pass?

We were stuck behind a Northern service, so that might have been it! It certainly didn't smell the same heading westbound the next day. Although that too was following a Northern service!
