319's with no marker lights , or reds on the front coming out of the non-track circuited turnback at SAC was not that uncommon - reported several , often informally by catching the drivers eye and pointing with one hand at the front end , and at your eyes with the other. They got the message. Once with a "thanks mate" over the PA when moving off , after the mandatory running brake test, - or a soft horn tone.

The best I ever got was a “Sh*t thanks guv’ “

Not on an Absolute Block line it wouldn't. There aren't many left but they do still exist.

Enough absolute block lines around - a 153 got left mid-section at Dorrington (duff unit being towed home) , within my living memory. (on the Hereford - Salop route for those not having a handy Quail Map)

Done that more times than I care to remember. Soft tone on the horn from me as a thanks was my usual response.

So, friend , it was you ! (or maybe not)

I seem to recall in the days of slam door stock on the Southern , it was permissible for shuttle workings to have one white /one red blind on a 2 EPB working say Addiscombe to Elmers End or Bromley North to Grove Park - which makes considerable sense on a self contained , "Locked in" working.

Not noticed this in real life, but saw an example on TV not long ago, in an re-run of Portillo's Great British Railway Journeys.

MP was doing his thing in the Manchester area. The programme's editors presumably wanted to include a clip of a train arriving at Swinton station. Seemingly the film crew hadn't taken any footage of a train arriving there, but did have a shot of a DMU departing.

So they ran the video backwards - giving the spectacle of a Northern Pacer arriving into Swinton with two red tail lights on the front - and on the wrong platform, given the island platform layout there.

Continuity / detail errors are not unknown in GBRJ (jackets and seat upholstery can magically change colour), but running the film backwards was a bit cheeky.

Hopefully not in manual signalling days on the MML , whereas some conversations would have been had by the relevant DI's to various signalmen.
No, not that long ago. Early 90s I guess.
And surely a few drivers on the up flicking their marker lights. Although in days of parcels trains maybe there was nothing coming the other way!
Not sure lights on at the back of the loco would have been readily visible to a driver in the other direction.

Several times had to point out incorrect marker lights on the Tyne & Wear Metro for trains coming out of the turn back at Benton. Always got a wave and thumbs up from the driver.

Good stuff , another pair of eyes on things like this , does no harm at all.

A couple of days ago I saw a Southern flick from white to red half way down the platform as it was arriving at London Bridge. Can't say I've noticed that happen before but I guess at that point there's nothing they would be protecting.

Long standing performance of arriving trains at terminii setting up for the return journey , blinds as well as marker lights.

E.G. - trains departing Wimbledon Park with blinds showing "Upminster" ...

Tut tut.

Certainly not seen as good practice these days! At my place a driver seen flicking reds up half way along a terminal platform would likely be hauled in for no tea and biscuits...

What with TPWS grids approaching the stops, and the stops themselves to avoid crashing into, probably with very good reason!

I've seen reds up front a couple of times. Also saw once at Birmingham New Street (no idea if units had been split-but it was before the current timetable where it became common) a 350 which I was about to board displaying head AND tail lights on the rear. Had a quiet word with the guard, who rang the driver who came and fixed it. Whilst checking tickets, she thanked me for it.

It shows up on the TMS that the headlights/markers are illuminated at the rear. It means doing the walk of shame!

Of course , for those old enough to recall - station pilot engines when they had them for shunting (class 08's typically) , carried one red and one white light at both ends.

Even more obscure , and there was a rule book change to remove the requirement, during emergency single line working , the train running through the temporary SLW section - with pilotman on board , put two reds on the front.

Witnessed this once at Halifax Junction Ipswich , we had a derailed Freightliner (nothing too serious) , so they had SLW on the down between the station and Bentley , so whilst waiting for the breakdown guys to do their stuff an up London with a 47 as haulage went by with the 2 reds on the front. "Another old fashioned driver said the AMI laconically...."
