What I was thinking about that the 51 Class 185 Desiros could be coupled up into 6 carriages permanently so they could operate the services of Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes, Manchester Piccadilly to Hull and Leeds after the new trains enter the services. And of the TransPennine Express franchise gains the new services between Liverpool Lime Street to Nottingham and possibly to Leicester after the East Midlands franchise changes and 185s would be operating the services. And the new trains are 12 Class 397 Civitys will be used on the Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley, 19 Class 802/2 Agility Trains will be used on the Manchester Airport to Newcastle and Liverpool Lime Street to Edinburgh Waverley via Newcastle, and 14 Class 68 and Mark 5A Coaches will be used on the Manchester Airport to Middlesbrough and Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough.

And here are the Nova fleets list for the future:

Nova 1: Class 802/2 Agility Trains
Nova 2: Class 397 Civitys
Nova 3: Class 68 and Mark 5A Coach
Nova 4: Class 185 Desiros

TPE plan is to make all Manchester-Cleethorpes services 6 coaches by early 2020 (after all the stock is introduced). As well as hourly stops at Habrough. As for Nottingham-Liverpool and Liverpool to Leicester (the Latter has been discussed for future TPE franchise) , the former would be run by Class 802’s most possible.

It's probably desirable to keep the flexibility of 3-car units to a TOC I would think.
