To be honest, I'd agree that Sheffield station always feels safe at night, and I am there most nights!

We all know that the current ticketing system is a farce. I am a conductor based at Edinburgh & spend a lot of my time explaining to my passengers that two or even three tickets combined could be cheaper than the one they've just bought from the ticket machine, indeed I once issued a passenger 4x CDRs instead of a SVR and saved her about £25.

I am known as the "Combination King" at the Waverley as during my commercial training course my totals at the end of each exercise were consistently lower than the "official" answers due to applying the combination ticket law. The training officer just gave up on me.

That's very kind of you. Are you officially allowed to do this? I remember somewhere someone mentioned that TOC employees are not allowed to advise passengers of split ticketing unless the passenger asks for it him/herself.

I'm happy to do this also, passengers do ask for split tickets occasionally but i'm more than happy to check the splitting myself, and sell the cheapest ticket(s) available. It's expensive enough on the railway without paying more than is required. I've never been notified by my particular TOC, line manager or otherwise of this being frowned upon. It wouldn't stop me doing it anyway. Everyone ASKED for it. :)

Officially not, but if no-one's told them not to... ;) Some management do frown upon it (e.g. FCC according to reports in, IIRC a magazine - possibly Rail?). If a member of staff is willing to offer splits that's brilliant and I applaud them for this, but I'd never criticise anyone for not offering it as I know they are not obliged to and some managers may tell them off if they find out.

And of course its not always possible to know every possible split, especially if its an uncommon journey and the train goes in 2 minutes.

There's also the small matter of putting yourself (and your TOC) in breach of the Ticketing and Settlement Agreement by breaching the "impartial retailing" rules contained therein.

Saving passengers money is a good thing, providing you stick to the rules, but your employer won't think so if it costs them money (and neither will any other TOCs who might be entitled to a share of the revenue from the through ticket).

Also, don't forget that there are numerous TOC management types (including at least one MD), journalists, and the like, on the forum, who, rightly or wrongly, could quite easily turn round and have you hauled over the coals for making such an admission. (Like, say, a gross misconduct charge).

Cheers,

Barry
