Modern railways, July 2019 has stated that bombardier have yet to build any units for SWR with only 5 of the 111 for GA being completed.

We are gonna be waiting a while since bombardier also have a backlog of 222 trains

Photos of the first 2 units under construction for SWR are on page 17 of this thread (before you joined the forum) so take what is in MR with a pinch of salt...
412 Aventra Units ordered (between 4-10 cars) with over 100 already completed.
With GA the idea was to produce a small number of units and test them before ramping up production (being the first 24m units)

I think now the 710's are starting to come in properly, the 720 production will start to ramp up. The first one of those is apparently undergoing testing, no idea how long that takes, but I reckon by the end of 2019 a few should be delivered to GA, and then the 701's will start to trickle in once the 720's are in full swing.

Derby is operating multiple production lines so 701 and 720 production in parallel just as 345s and 710s have been produced in parallel. Production for 701 and 720 will ramp up once 345 and 710 production completes.

Indeed, but since the 710s are about a year behind schedule, so too will be the 701s.

Driving past Bombardier today I notice a center vehicle in SWR which looked almost complete.

blame Modern Railways not me, they clearly have old information although they are not complete units ready to leave are they?? Under construction doesn’t count as complete.

Where did you get 412?? (This doesn’t include LNR or C2C bare in mind)

Only 325 are currently known to be on order according to Modern railways and bombardier

345 x70 (Crossrail)
710 x54 (LO)
720 x111 (Anglia)
701 x90 (SWR)
730 x81 (LNR)
711 x6 (C2C)

Total = 412 units

60+ Crossrail units and the majority of the LO units are complete (albeit spread around a bit)

Well considering they should have been in service from earlier this year and around 50-60 in traffic (enough to replace all the non PRM EMUs which is around 100 4 cars) by year end a ‘few’ would constitute a delay in my mind.

You have seen the CAF rolling stock threads?
One of the reasons for Bombardier was the overall performance including features and low maintenance requirements which you won't get with CAF.

True for most of the fleet but some are still being built now either that or they just haven't been delivered
At least 30x 710 units stored + some at Old Dalby and Crewe for testing.
With Goblin soon to be all 710 soon there isn't a big rush as for TfL /LO, it look like they want to get the software and lagging features sorted before the WAML roll out.
With all the stock available so quickly the big step will be getting drivers trained at a sensible rate.

As "Samuelmorris" says, CAF aren't exactly without their own issues. SWR will have ordered the Aventras in good faith as the best deal at the time, of course not knowing about the future issues. If they were ordering now, possibly they would have gone elsewhere.

There is also significantly less pressure on SWR as there aren't any PRM issues / deadline with the exiting stock and Waterloo and Feltham works are running late and the power supply need improving in places so not the biggest rush.

Are 707 and 455 PRM compliant? Last i heard neither these had a universal accessible toilets?

Lets hope the 701 wait is worth it

Yeah they are, 707s were built PRM compliant and 455s were recently modified.
They don't need an accessible toilet because they don't have any toilets onboard currently

PRM only specifies that if there is a toilet, at least one must be accessible. Since they have no toilets they still comply.

Indeed. One suggested way of achieving PRM compliance on the 153s without reducing capacity has been to permanently lock the toilet. Not sure whether this is actually going to happen though.

So they could squeeze an extra row of seats in a 20m driving car bodyshell.
I note that the franchise specification stated that coaches for any new stock must be max 20m. Given that the 710s will also have toilets it's possible that the extra row of seats was needed to meet the capacity specification.

Not sure why max 20m was specified, given that the Class 458 driving cars are 21m long.

20m because of a few infrastructure issues.

It certainly helps compensate for the loss of toilet space but also gives them a capacity edge over bidders...

You cannot achieve PRM compliance just by locking toilets out of use. There are a range of other items that need to be compliant, including but not limited to: wheelchair spaces, call for aid facility, PIS, door button position, door opening sounders, handrail position/colour etc etc

SWT’s (at the time) 455s were modified to be compliant on the last round of C62 overhauls at Bournemouth.

Fitting a universal access toilet, however, is by far the most expensive modification to make and also tends to have the biggest impact on capacity (which on a 153 is at a premium!).

Having discussed this with the DfT, the notion of locking toilets out isn't seen favourably. Reducing accessibility to comply with accessibility regulations isn't wise.

Shame comfort isnt part of the regulations as the iron board seats will be on the 701s annoyingly

Yawn, the seat complaint is getting more and more boring everytime it is mentioned.
Yep and I'm really starting to regret doing the April Fools' ironing on the ironing board spoof 6 years ago :D
