Doubling back from Reading to Twyford

I recently saw someone getting PFed on a stopper from Reading to Paddington (no, it wasn't me!) From what I could make out, he held a ticket from PAD to RDG, had taken an express between the two, and was now doubling back to Twyford. He wasn't happy...

I'm fairly sure that there is (or at least was) an easement which allows one to go PAD-TWY via RDG in the way that this chap did. Now, I know that if you buy a PAD-TWY ticket, then using that easement is precluded by the ticket stating "NOT READING".

However, a PAD-RDG ticket will self-evidently never state the same thing. So, could one not argue that the PAD-TWY portion of that ticket allows one to take advantage of the above easement? If not, why not, and does that mean that "NOT READING" has no actual effect, and is just there for clarity?

No there isn't an easement for a ticket from Reading, however if one holds a Twyford - London/Day Travelcard, it has two routes Via Reading or Not Via Reading (no Any Permitted route)
If you pay extra for the via Reading ticket you can obviously travel via Reading, but in practice it doesn't make a huge difference to the journey time (if you time it right)

You sure he didn’t have a Paddington to Twyford ticket (because that’s his home station) but was stopped on the journey between Reading and Twyford whilst on his ‘doubling back’? This is what people would tend to to usually.

So this person had already reached Reading and then caught a train back to Twyford claiming that they were still on their way to Reading?
