The [Class 180] consistently being split up and sent to different depots and companies for maintenance every so often throughout their lifetime. As every engineer has his style of maintaining things and as the fleet kept having problems, it was hard to keep track of what work had been carried out on each train.

Do trains not have a service record that travels with it?
(thinking like a car here).

I guess individual companies will do things differently, but I would have thought the owning company would keep a record?

Everything is recorded through TOPS & latest systems as well as paper records.

Maintenance records are kept by the home depot. The only paperwork actually kept on a unit / loco is the current fault book, used by drivers to record defects

Here are some historical ones.

Look out for a couple of fiery exchanges between drivers and fitters.

I believe that most modern traction can run diagnostics and record faults. 66's do on the EM2000.

Southern don't use fault books on their units, all faults are reported through control onto a maintenance system that handles all of the fault logging and preventative maintenance. This also enables checks to be carried out on multiple units (if a unit is running in multiple and develops a fault) without having to find three fault logs on three units to report the defect.

Through RAVERS, rather than TOPS, wasn’t it? Now done either via a TOC’s own system or R2.

Suffice to say it is far more detailed and methodical than a car’s records!

Most definatley more detailed. My 4year involvement in the late 90s only dealt with TOPS for locos/stock & GEMINI for DMUs.
