Anyone know why the last three in the down direction off Victoria (Portsmouth and Southsea/Chichester and Bognor Regis/Chichester) stop all stations Horsham to Barnham rather than running fast as normal?

Is it to save staffing and create easier paths for ECS moves on the back of these services ?

Last fast off Horsham down is 2200

Makes the journey 10 plus min longer.. doesn't sound much but seems to drag
2236 is also far too early for the last train to Chichester a city with a large number of well heeled passengers who go to see plays at the west end etc

Usually fast trains on the network tend to slow down and stop at all stations or extra stations to get late night punters home.

In regards to Chichester, I imagine the last train runs a bit early because by the time it will get to the south coast it will be midnight. The line needs to be closed for overnight maintenance from time to time and they would rather do this without forking out for buses or taxis I imagine.

I would suggest requesting Govia management for more late night trains to Chichester if possible from London. If not, see if it is possible from the likes of Brighton or Portsmouth so that you could get a later train from London to those bigger cities and change if need be.

Yeah there's later trains to Havant from Waterloo but that's a fair drive

On Saturday night there's a later train from vic via hove
Brighton is one hour away so nowhere near
Thankfully thameslink drivers on the old contract who live on the coast are eligible for company taxis home from three bridges Horsham and Brighton depots

If the demand genuinely warrants it, and I have been to Chichester before, it does look busy and vibrant on a Saturday night - having a shuttle train connect with the last arrival from London at Havant doesn't seem a bad shout? Connects with both the London and Portsmouth late night punters.

The last three trains no longer split into fast and slow portions at Horsham, so that will presumably be the main reason they call at all stations. Question is though, are they still long enough trains to split? One splits at Barnham so that one must be able to. I expect it’s more likely all about traincrew diagrams as you suggest. Saves 3 traincrews south of Horsham, maybe there’s no trains joining in the up direction either at that time of night.

The last downs are all long trains

A shame the last two but one down cant run fast. You often hear passengers expressing annoyance as if it had only just dawned on them they don't all run fast

Of course during engineering work they may run via Hove which is still better than a bus !

The last fast down is therefore around 2100 off vic

Pretty sure Eastbourne has a much later service than the west coastway although as far as west Worthing it is fairly decent

Is a Chichester to London ticket valid via Havant?

Only if you purchase a ticket with route “Any Permitted” however there is a fairly large price difference especially in the off-peak.

You have to look hard to see that is a London train. On Eastbourne station's RTT list of arrival it shows as starting at Haywards Heath and on London Victoria's RTT list of departures it only mentions the Worthing portion

Yeah, it's strange that it does that. I know the Worthing portion stops to set down only after Haywards Heath, with the Eastbourne portion doing the same (with the exception of Lewes), so I wonder if it's anything to do with that.

Havant is no more than a 15 minute drive from Chichester, probably less at that time of night.
