A south Pennines Day ranger for Friday would be £14, and would do for Sheffield to Manchester to Leeds.

A Sheffield to York anytime return is £18.80, which would do from Leeds to York on Friday, and the return on Sunday.

There are other people here who know the area better than I do!

As mentioned the South Pennines day ranger is best, but wouldn't include the York bit. I personally don't see you would have time to do York as well - I did just the Dewsbury to Stalybridge section last month and that involved 7 pubs (Dewsbury station, Huddersfield station x2, Slaithwaite x 2, Marsden and Stalybridge), I really couldn't cope with any more!

The £14 South Pennines Day Ranger was the 2009 ticket and was not valid to Leeds. The 2009 leaflet is attached.

This has been replaced by the £18.50 South Pennines Day Ranger 2010. It is now valid by some, but not all routes between Sheffield and Leeds - see the map in the leaflet. It is valid via Barnsley but not via Moorthorpe. £18.50 is reduced to £12.20 if you use an appropriate railcard.

It is not valid between Leeds and York. Due to this factor and your return from York on a different day, I think the South Pennines Day Ranger 2010 may not be the best ticket for you. I can't get the total cost below £37.30 (made up of a £18.50 South Pennines Day Ranger and a £18.80 Anytime Return Sheffield - York). I think your party may be better with:
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) Penistone - Manchester route Sheffield £15.00
Use outward portion from Sheffield to Manchester
Excess return portion to Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) Penistone - Manchester route Huddersfield £0.30
CDR Penistone - Manchester route Huddersfield costs £15.60. You pay half the difference. Use this with return portion from Manchester to Huddersfield. Valid for break of journey.
Anytime Return (SOR) Sheffield - York £18.80
Use this from Huddersfield to York and York to Sheffield. Outward portion valid 5 days. Return portion valid 1 month. Valid for break of journey.
Total £34.10
There's a third off all these fares for those with an appropriate railcard.

Starting back at the Cellar Bar opposite Batley station would be sensible and continue the North Trans-Pennine theme. There's really no need to go to York at all. Just adding in cost and most of the pubs there are crap anyway.
