How would help the situation at Leeds? You would have more trains on the through platforms which are nearly at capacity in the peaks.

By running them through they just spend a minute or so at the platform, whereas a terminating train will wait 10min or more. The various previous suggestions of creating extra turnbacks east of Leeds (and indeed things like running more trains from west of Manchester to Rochdale/Stalybridge) were based on this principle.

As a more of a crayonista approach, if you don't know already I do like my crayons! You could reinstate 1km of the Otley Line from Arthington to Pool, give Pool a station which would appear to have plenty of more room for housing expansion to help justify the station, around the existing which I would say is already a fair amount. The line isn't electrified so no-need for wires.

Oh and its a lot closer to Leeds than Ikley and I think Burley Park & Headingley could do with some more services.

I would love to see that however extending it to pool is a short term cheap quick fix in comparison.

This may be off thread? Do we start a reopening Otley thread?

I am pretty sure that there are better things to spend cash on; however a reopening of the Otley line from the East rather than the West, makes some sense.

Reopening through Pool in Wharfdale would involve the demolition of some rather expensive houses in Pool, but apart from that the route is clear as far as the Leeds Road Roundabout at which point the trackbed has been used for the towns bypass. Current plan for Otley is to extend this bypass northwards joining the Pool Road to the east of the Garden Centre. A huge area of land to the west of the new road will then to be in filled with new housing. Any New Station near the Leeds Roundabout would give a reasonable walking distance to the town centre, whilst developers can be “taxed” to pay towards it. Developers could be asked to build a new housing estate in Pool to replace the demolished homes.

Electrify it and run a half hourly service to Leeds and combine it with capacity increases between Arthington and Leeds. Harrogate trains could then be sped up by skipping stops. There is also the new Airport station to factor in.

The entire thread's comic. Comparing Leeds and Fenchurch St in the period 16.45 to 18.15, the four platforms at Fenchurch street handle 28 departures. Leeds platforms 1-4 manage 13. The need isn't new platforms, it's new managers. There were better things to spend money on than Platform 0.

This is the exact same attitude as Chris Grayling saying "the Snow Hill tunnels can handle 24tph; why can't the Castlefield viaduct?"

If you look back at some of my earlier comments that were about running more trains through Leeds to somewhere like Ikley, my point about Pool was that its an alternative to Ikley.

On a lighter note, love how you remarked about going off thread before preceding to do so yourself. It made me chuckle.

I realise I may be in a minority on these forums, but I cant see a single thing wrong with someone in his position asking such a question (if indeed he did actually ask it).
Perhaps if his predecessors, and others at senior levels , had asked more questions of railway "professionals" we might not have the scandals of the Crossrail delays, rail electrification delays and cost escalation etc.

It's fine to ask the question. The problem is failing to listen to the answer.
