Hello. For a while, I've been wondering if the WMR 323's have a certain type of signalling that means no other EMU's can run the services they're used on.

I believe XC may use a Cross-city line on diversion but just curious as to why no other EMU's are used on this line. Nothing wrong with the 323's!

They're much quicker off the mark than most other EMUs, so can hold to a much tighter timetable than any other train given the frequency of stops. Worth noting they barely ever reach their lowish top speed (maybe north of Blake Street only?)

In the south there are plenty other scheduled services, none of which can be run by EMUs anyway. There are evening/morning Voyager depot runs in the north, too.

We’ll gladly take the whole lot in Northernland once you get your Aventras!

The Cross City service is specifically designed with 323 train lengths and performance profiles in mind. Diesels have run on it due to engineering work in the past (Central Trains used to do it now and then on a Sunday for electrical isolations) but nothing else will work satisfactorily on there without modification to the route or trains.

323s are good for 90 mph but rarely get much of a chance to achieve it.
