How many bays do need for a stop to be classed as a Bus Station?

One!

Monmouth bus station has one stand!

And no passenger facilities other than a shelter.

Cinderford - two stands one shelter
Pocklington - the yard in front of the depot with a single raised kerb

St Ives (Cornwall) - a waiting room but also the best view of any bus station

Some towns such as Blackpool no longer have a Bus Station and stops are scattered about the town centre.

Castle Donnington (near East Midlands Airport) is just two shelters.

I don’t think you can class Scunthorpe as a minimalist bus station. It’s quite large, has a waiting room, shelters etc. Louth is much more on the minimalist scale.

I guess it’s because there was a very large National Welsh site that had a depot, bus station, plus an area for redundant vehicles. Photo from Flickr

When they sold the site, was surprised that they even included a bus terminal.

Holmfirth bus station is just four bus stops that are located in what could be regarded as a turning circle beside a stream, which is in fact the River Holme. Heckmondwike Hub is just a series of bus stops around some square, it replaced the row of stops by the town / village green. Otley bus station is located on some spare land outside of some stopping precint and formed of four DIRO (drive in, reverse out) bays which has a bog standard bus stop located just outside which acts as its fifth stand. When I went to Westbury for the first time I had a local call the shelter ajacent to what was Barclays, a bus station. An interesting one to me is the Newton Abbot "bus station" which is a smattering of stops that adorn Sherborne Road and is located to the rear of the local indoor market.

One more from my travels. Harwich Bus Station. It's an insult to the phrase "Bus Station"

It is the most depressing place I have ever used a bus. One stop, no shelter of its own (just the train station next door)

It is a genuine s**thole.

The bus interchange at Orpington station is classed as a 'bus station' just 3 bays with minimal shelters & some parking bays for buses to wait between trips. There isn't anything for the drivers they have to use the station facilities if required.

The "Bus Station" in Diss is basically just what could be a car park with a shelter next to it.

Keswick is three stops with no shelter and horrendous over-crowding at busy times. At least there is some shelter to be had on Booths next door!

Monmouth still 'feels' like a bus station, it even has a grand exit! It's still the place that all the buses go to, something that Cardiff could look into as an idea!

It used to be the forecourt of the long-closed Highland Omnibuses garage. The timetables use the term, and the OS map uses the symbol/description, depending on scale.

You've beaten me to it - I was going to mention Nairn

The garage is long-closed and demolished - there are flats on the site now, and a takeaway occupies the building on the north side.

The 5th stop does have a huge bus shelter (standard but very long) - I was waiting in it on Wednesday.

A couple of faves from Lancashire... Earby is one bus shelter with a horseshoe turning circle (and public toilets) but Whalley has 3 stands with shelters - lord knows why in a village. It was apparently a Ribble bus station “back in the day” but why it existed.....??

I won't say I remember it well, but I certainly remember Newton Abbot bus station and the no. 12s waiting in line for departure!

Mablethorpe has a bus station, but if bustimes.org is to be believed, only 1 bus a day uses it. 14 different routes use the bus shelter opposite though.
