Cheltenham Spa and Bath Spa have barriers that are closed with no member of staff supervising in person. If there is an issue, you can press a button for a video link though. Gloucester has new-ish ticket barriers on Platform 4 but I’m not sure if these get staffed or not.

Or even if there is a power cut, the gates will open automatically if in use as it sounds a alarm, same as the OP above me will sound the alarm.
Yep. Each gate has an emergency open battery in it to open the paddles in a power cut. With the old pneumatic gates you get in central London an air dump valve is operated in a power cut / emergency open / fire alarm situation to lose the air pressure to the gateline. With Cubic gates its just a 24v signal that controls this dump valve or runs into each electric gate. Lose the 24v signal and everything opens.

I was delayed by an hour arriving into Gloucester last September due to a cancelled train. I used the new unmanned barrier to exit the station but needed to keep my ticket for a delay repay claim/ I pressed the help button, explained the situation and was opened remotely for me after I had presented my ticket to the camera so person operating the barrier could see it.

I believe these are now also issued with an ITSO counterpart which works on some but not all gatelines.
My own TOC issues me with a smart card to pass through all gates within that TOC area however when travelling anywhere else on BR boxes I have to trouble a member of gateline to let me pass each time.

Latest issue in April was card only for me.

Perhaps it is a difference between active and retired staff? I have definitely seen some members of staff with an ITSO counterpart.

Only holders of "Status Passes" (both active and retired) have an ITSO card which will open barriers - if you have a Staff Travel Card (i.e. "boxes") then that is issued on paper and will not work the barriers.

I was then going to say a mate of mine has a status pass so has no bother whereas us minions with boxes have to seek help :D

The barriers at Perth station for platforms 5, 6 and 7 were remotely monitored by CCTV from the main gate line in the station foyer, an assistance button and intercom was there for anyone requiring assistance, I'm unsure if this is still the case though.

Barriers at Ipswich have to be manned if there is no gateline staff to monitor it needs to be left open. But I think that is more for ticketing issues as the barriers will open automatically if say the fire alarm is activated

At Ipswich you need to ask staff to let you through the gate line if you just want to visit the station lost property office

Has been brought up before about people needing to pass through the gateline to access Customer Service after the redesign of the concourse. I'd like to think no issues arose with the gateline staff letting you through though
