Platforms 3 and 4 arent even in use. This could be a useful calling point, connecting the ELL to horsham or brighton

When I saw this I thought I'm almost certain this already happens, but according to National Rail journey planner that no longer seems to be the case (they definitely did in the recent past)? :s

The two majpr problems are: the platforms can only take 8 cars; in the peak the line is close to capacity, so stopping peak hour trains on the Fasts has been a no-no as long as I can remember.
(@brad465 yes, there were offpeak TL services when LBG reopened - I went through to Finsbury Park that way)
IMO increasing the number of main line stops at Norwood Junction would be more feasible, though still not easy. ATM it's only 2ph in the peak, and off-peak the additional Coulsdon trains run immediately before/after the Gatwicks.

The Fast Line cas were removed in May 2018. Basically not possible with the Thameslink timetable.

I think this will need to wait for the changes at Windmill Bridge Junction / East Croydon before anything changes and maybe not even then.

I once travelled from the heart of Kent to trendy, hip East London.

This involved a change at both Tonbridge and New Cross. I remember thinking it might be useful to have some of the longer distance stoppers stop at New Cross, but of course, it doesn't have platforms on the fast lines.

I can well see why the central would want to stop at Gate though.

That'll probably add even more trains...meaning even less chance of anything stopping.

It would be a retrograde step and benefit relatively few passengers. The LBG-ECR corridor is a key path from the BML to central London. Now London Bridge is complete and the Bermondsey diveunder is enabling a steady flow of Thameslink and Southern trains*, which helps minimise the disruption through Windmill Bridge and Norwood junction.
* At New Cross Gate, there are 18 TPH (11 TL and 8 SN) passing platform 4 between 07:30 and 08:30, and even off-peak there are 11 TPH (6 TL and 5 SN).

To my mind, in the future it would be the best to have everything timed to stop at NXG with services up to 3 minutes. Sadly, it’s not easy enough to do.

Also, trying to push people onto Overground when it’s already PIXC (passengers in excess of capacity) is not useful.
