The interior looked great on South Today.

Anyone know if I can catch a service Waterloo to BSK on its first day whenever that may be !?

As far as I know the only services that will run wat to bsk with a 442 are the weekday 1848 and 2105 ex Waterloo. Happy to be corrected by those with diagram access though.

Whether they'll run on the Monday 20/5, I've really no clue....

2105 sounds good. Even on the BBC there was still no mention of when they’re coming online.

Apparently each coach is costing £500K to refurb!

I think from earlier discussions (post #3172) the cost for the 442 work averaged out across the 90 carriages includes the retractioning, which you’d expect takes up a large proportion of the cost, but is yet to really start.

The 444/450 interior overhaul seemed to be £68K per carriage which seems more typical...

On a less important note, the front panels should be put back on.

On a slightly more important note, he said they were getting new seats, but they're not (unless he was talking about First Class).

Agree, the train would like tidier with front panels covering the pipes...

I'm not getting into seat intracies, but new seat/back cushions are being provided. Guess you mean the frame not being changed....

Yes, 1st are getting FISA LEAN seats which are excellent Standard Class seats but have no place in First Class.

There is a first class variant available, which is used on the GA Stadler units. That seems a bit more suitable for the job.

It would indeed be more suitable, but SWR have decided that 2+2 seating is correct for First Class in units where Standard is also 2+2. I disagree, and they won't be getting any of my money for it.

I can see a lot of First Class commuters not bothering to renew their season ticket and instead opting for standard. Passengers have gone as far as to (jokingly) ask how they can slow down the refurbishment on both the 450 and 444 units. The old 444 first class was really nice, the new one is terrible. All in the name of extra seats I suppose. I personally don’t see the point in having first on the 450s any more which is probably what the DfT want people to think.

I tend to agree about the 450s, especially given that the next South Eastern franchise requires the complete withdrawal of 1st Class. We have to remember that there have been high profile campaigns with apparently popular support to reduce or abolish 1st Class across the network, so the DfT is only doing what people want.

Looking at the diagrams posted by @Train Boy there appears to be a balancing issue, only 1 unit finishes in Portsmouth but 2 start from Fratton, assume 5P20 will continue to run from Bournemouth instead of Fratton?

RTT seems to show that there is no 5p20 from Bournemouth depot post 19/5 but rather a 1b88 ECS to Southampton airport in the same pathway. Who knows? There was a rumour a while back that a 442 would berth overnight at Southampton. Not sure how true that is. There is a 5p14 0501 ECS from Southampton to petersfield to form a 2p16 stopper from petersfield to Waterloo, but really don't know what stock.

2P16 is currently a 12 car 450. Now you mention airport parkway that sounds familiar but I’m not sure how it could drop into the diagram quoted.

Can you imagine the uproar from some of the users of the Alton Line and Haslemere if First Class is removed on the 450s. On the 450s the First Class is still sufficiently different from Standard to justify a premium at least, even though the refurbished units are less comfortable than the unrefurbished ones.

2+2 1st is fine on a 3+2 unit. Fundamentally 1st needs to give you more space than Standard, be that width, legroom or both. On the refurbished 444s it does neither, though at least unlike 350/1s the comfort isn't worse in 1st than Standard.

in response to previous mentions in #3217 #3218, i totally agree that they should have their front covers put back on them and has been the case in previous times, after a while the area around the high level jumper pipes will get dirty and become black, so the covers need to be replaced to give the yellow end panel that's required on these.

Considering most of SWR's trains now have fronts black with filth they'll fit in well...

Today i noticed that 2405 had been moved in Eastleigh depot and 2424 was moved to Arlingtons at Eastleigh and has had its shoegear removed again, so is this heading back to Ely papworth

Yes. 2405 and 2424 have been refitted with jumper covers when they were moved to Eastleigh from Ely papworth, they were also refitted with shoe gear at the same time, but now 2424 has had shoe gear removed and it looks like 2405's is also being removed again.

I noticed in the cab photos posted a little while back, that there's a kind of corner post in the middle of the nice wraparound windows... Is that how they were built or a later addition/mutilation?

That is how they were built. the corner post gives the cab some extra strength and is also part of the body fabrication when built before the GRP cab was attached.
