bikes on buses

Border buses have new double decker,s ADL buses that advertise 4 bike spaces is there any other operators in uk who offer bike spaces or is it just use buggy/disabled area if not in use i know trains have bike areas.

The 79 bus from the Old Steine to Ditchling Beacon will have space for two bikes at weekends and on bank holiday Mondays

The Oxford Tube takes bikes. Although primarily used between London and Oxford, local journeys between Oxford and Lewknor are also possible. Flixbus take bikes on most if not all services, including services to London.

Not in the UK, but in Los Angeles, all Metro buses have a bike rack attached to the front. Whether anyone actually cycles in LA is another question!

London Transport operated special 'bike buses' when the Dartford Tunnel crossing opened. You stowed your bike, then went upstairs to sit down for the duration: you weren't allowed to cycle in the tunnel, of course. I believe an occasion when more than two cyclists used the service was cause for celebration!

Loads in New Zealand as well. Plus Canberra in Australia. Bike racks on the front of the bus.

Stagecoach Bluebird had some, but one route (35) has just converted to double deckers so it can no longer take bikes. Not all the coaches now used have the racks, some you just have to put the bike in the luggage compartment without the rack. On some routes it is pot luck if you get a coach or a service bus.

Stagecoach North Scotland had 4 "bike rack bus routes". Elgin Depot's 31, 32 & 36 using Enviro200's and Inverness's 26/26A/26C using Volvo B7RLE's.

Technically speaking all the coaches can take bikes.

Go North East used to have a dedicated bike space on the clapped out old Volvo single decks they used to the 8/78 service between Consett/Stanley and Sunderland.

I say "space", it was the buggy bay with some harnesses attached....

By the late 80s when I was using that route (mainly evenings after the Gravesend - Tilbury ferry had stopped running) they had got rid of the buses and were using a long wheelbase transit with a crew cab and some wooden bars bolted on, with ropes to tie the bikes on! Haven't a clue what they're using these days, I haven't been near the place since 1989!

At that time of night, naturally I was the only user!

Police cars, mainly. If you make advance arrangements for a group then they'll send for a minibus with a trailer, but if you just turn up at the yellow telephone and ask for a ride, it will usually be in a police vehicle.

Elsewhere, am I right in thinking that Arriva used to have some vehicles with American-style bus racks in North Wales? I have an unfortunate feeling that some kind of demarcation dispute led to them being withdrawn.

It's not actually a police vehicle, it's run by the crossing control and "lives" on the Dartford side. Basically a large van which can take about 6 bikes.
