Class 172

Does anybody know whether work has officially commenced on the 172s yet?

Since delivery of the 12 2-car sets and 15 3-car sets is scheduled between Q1 2010 and Q2 2010, I would hope so!

These are second generation 'green' Turbostars, initially developed by Bobardier for Porterbrook Leasing for Govia/London Midland, as class 150 repalcements.

Construction takes place at Derby, although the bogies are being supplied from a Bombardier facility in Germany.

One thing im wondering though, Whose 172s will be deliverd first?

Becasue the GOBLIN will be closed between Saturday 20 February and 1 June 2010, so will the 172s for LOROL be arriving in May? Thus the transfer of the 150s can begin, or will the 6 remaining 150s just sit around in Wilsden for the best part of 3 months?

It's Gospel Oak-Stratford that's closed for that period.

I believe they are delayed because of the electrostars that were needed to start the thameslink project. They were made the priority over the turbostars.

Well they were meant to be ready before 172s, so I'd have been suprised if they held 377/5s

Well from what i can remember the 337/5s were delayed in the 1st place which created a backlog.

Which is why Southern had to transfer some units to FCC to get the thamelink program started.

The plan was for two assembley lines doing Electrostars, one 377/5, the other 378's. With the run of 377/5 running nine months late (based on Bombardier's Decemeber 2008 date, when the first unit was supposed to be on test on TL) the turning over of the assembley line to 172 is similar very late.

This lead to the shuffling of units around with FCC (internally as well), Southeastern, Southern and London Midlands with drivers borrowed from a freight operator.

Rumour is the first 172 will be finished next month but no pictures have appeared as of yet.
