Roger Ford reports in February's Modern Railways that Chiltern are introducing refurbished Mk3 coaches for their new Oxford service with power doors and retention toilets - construction of the prototype carriage is about to start.

I'm a little surprised Chiltern is using these on the Oxford services rather than the longer Birmingham route though.

I thought the Mark 3 sets would go through to Birmingham releasing units for the Oxford services.

Interesting,

we've loads of mk3s lying around the country for sale, power doors come as standard but needs a change of bogies to fit the UK gauge plus could also do with an internal refurb.;)

Where are Chiltern getting the mk3s, I was always under the impression all serviceable ones are accounted for?

Guess its probably a better bet to use the 67s on the shorter route because of track access charges.

Its wrong, they are to be used on peak services out of Snow Hill in the morning and back in the evening. You wont see them until 2012 either.

Power doors as in mk4 style? That'll be quite interesting :)

More than likely not, I would imagine. The simplest solution is just to have the opening mechanism powered. Look at the mods to the 455 or whatever it was, trying to put plug doors in. Whole thing sagged in, as the removal and change of door type ledtoa horrible loss of body strength.

But the 455 doors are at 1/3 and 2/3 length so will have a serious effect on body strength, and only one of the 2 converted, 71731, suffered this and was withdrawn, replaced by 67400 a 210 DEMU trailer, the other 71732 was converted back to sliding doors.
Arent 442 trailers basically Mk3s with power doors?
Yes they are, and dont forget some mark 3 trailers were taken over to Ireland and converted to power doors.

Well we have loads of spare bogies underneath the mark 3 sleepers and buffets that are stored.

The Planner is correct - Roger (Captain Deltic) has posted a mea culpa on uk.railway to explain that he wrote up the story on press deadline day and got it wrong.

Chiltern already have the MK3 Set - comprising of ex virgin mk3s, and was mooved from Eastleigh to Crewe sometime 2008/2009...

As for the Ex Irish Mk3s - that would be the logical idea, to bring those over here and make use of already power fitted coaches, rather than DIY-ing it, but there is one main problem with them. The only way anyone could use the Ex IE Mk3s would be if they rebogied them and used them with the generator coach becasue they are wired differently - BR Mk3s are wired through to take head end power, whilst IE Mk3s are wired to take power from the generator van because of the lack of locos with head end power provision, as a result of this, they run off a different power voltage: 220/380V , Whereas our loco hauled Mk3s run off head end power via ETH : 1000V DC

The bogies - im not sure about this, but couldnt they be chopped and rebuilt ? afterall, unless you wanted them for spares - all bogies have to be checked and refurbished sometime in there life - the idea came to me after reading about the GNER Power Car refurbishment that had said that the bogies were to be taken apart and rebuilt, So would this be possible with the Mk3s?

But anythings possbile - afterall, look at all the Ex Loco Hauled Mk3s running around in HST rakes with FGW/XC/GC, And all the ex HST Trailers and catering cars running around in Loco Hauled rakes...

Depending on which rumour you believe this week (shame we can't turn rumours into fuel!), the Irish Rail Mark 3s would be regauged using bogies from redundant Mk 3 Sleepers, or possibly have brand new bogies made in Hong Kong!

Cheers,

Barry
