Could the class 707s be used for the Cathcart Circle Lines?

Limited to 2 trips in a row due to the traction motors overheating as a result of the low speeds. 380s and 385s are also limited to 2 trips in a row for the same reason.

How is that going to work when the line becomes all 385?

I dont think the plan is for it to be 100% 385s on the Circle. We've got plenty of 318/320s to do the slow stuff. I think you'll see nearly all the Lanark services from High level run with 385s, a mix of all 318/320/380 and 385 on the Newton/Neilston and Circle services.

I was going to say, that'll be a great service if every 385 goes out of service after two trips!

They won't have to go out of service after 2 trips on the Circle, they will just have to go on a longer journey ie; Lanark, Edinburgh via Shotts or Newton/Neilston etc.

Seems ridiculous when 314s can manage.

All to do with the regenerative braking on the 380 and 385 and the rheostatic braking on a 334 (334s used to overheat badly on the Circle) generating heat that doesn't get dissipated quickly enough on slow speed routes like the Circle - remember all 3 classes are designed for 90mph (334) and 100 mph (380/385) medium distance high speed runs and not for short stop/start slow speed routes like the Circle. The 314s were the ideal unit for the Circle.

So is it simply that the splitstream from running faster cools the motors then?

Aren't 707s 100mph units? Yet don't they get used on lower speed stoppers not entirely dissimilar in nature to a Cathcart Circle duty?

I assume the higher speed, less frequent stops keeps the motors and the traction control units cooler. This info comes from one of our Op Standards guys, so I tend to believe it.

Can't say about 707s as no idea about them except they have the cab the 380 should've had!

I've said before the Hitachi AT100 would be a good fit for Cathcart, Argyle and Canal lines. Probably fixed 6 car formation with possibility of extension to 7 in future.
Would provide commonality with the class 385.

I think it says it all that the 334s, 380s and 385s are not so suited to shorter workings because of traction overheating. These trains were not built for such short workings. If they weren’t going to purchase new metro style suburban units for short workings then they should have just used 318s and 320s as they seem to do the job. I always thought the 380s and 385s were a bad replacement for the 314s on shorter workings.

I think the AT100 would have been perfect for Paisley Canal, Cathcart, Neilston, Barrhead routes. Then when East Kilbride is electrified they could add that to the Argyle Line using 320s and 318s.
