Ok thanks guys, was thinking it might have been a speed limit for workings in the hard but cab radio sounds more reasonable

I hope they don't remove CSR signs. There are many that make good braking area indications.

Perhaps they could leave the signs but put a black cross on them to show they no longer apply because they are obsolete?

No need to risk lives or waste money...those that need to know they are obsolete already do so.

why? Everyone who needs to know knows they are obsolete and I would rather we didn't waste time and money and put people at risk to stick a bit of black masking tape on a sign.

I meant if they are useful for route knowledge as being helpful landmarks instead of removing them. Unless you're suggesting they just get left as is?

i suggest leaving them alone until work is being done in the area then removing them if required.

I would like to see them replaced with the equivalent GSMR panel numbers. They are very useful to prompt panel changeover locations.

CSR 15 (on my patch) was Battersea pier and into Victoria but I don't recognise that location in the picture.

I’d prefer it if projects cleaned up after themselves rather than just introducing more and more lineside signage/clutter and never removing redundant assets. The GSM-R project introduced thousands of new signs nationwide (a lot of the work such as creating SSFs and arranging installation was given unwanted to the already snowed-under RAM teams) but the removal of the old NRN and CSR channel change boards was not part of the scope and they were left in situ. The problem being that although they’re signalling assets they refer to redundant telecoms assets and the SSMs have no money or, indeed, inclination to remove them. Meanwhile post-SPAD Signal Sighting Committees up and down the land are making recommendations about removing visual clutter and nonessential lineside signage (which I strongly support) and the poor Route SSE is left to try and implement with no budget for the work and no authority to make anyone do anything. All in all it’s a sorry mess.

agreed - projects should tidy up after themselves. However, I do know why it doesn't happen happen ( unlike many here!)

I guess a huge issue with the GSM(R) changeover was that new and obsolescent radio systems had to be working in parallel for quite a long period?

"Risk lives"? As for wasting money, does this mean that you advocate leaving all obsolete signs and other items in situ? The first rule of good communications is to minimise information such that only the relevant remains - clutter is harmful, both from an information standpoint and a physical one (the sign has to be walked round by track staff, putting them closer to the track). The railway estate is inexorably being cluttered by obsolete and abandoned items.

Care to share ?

Without going into to much detail it is fairly obvious stuff stemming from poor scoping through commercial agreements, funding challenges, time pressure and resources.

Sigh. Point missed.

Unfortunately the GSM-R project was not remitted to remove the existing radio signs (CSR & NRN) and many are still dotted around the country

To answer the specific question, these signs were located at signaller change areas to inform drivers to change channel so that the correct signaller can be contacted

The GSMR project wasn’t remitted to remove the CSR infrastructure full stop!! Hence why many of the old masts/ REBs still exist

The standard 'not our problem' approach these days - no-one takes responsibility for the removal of clutter. Endemic on the railway.

Who is maintaining these old masts? They surely need routine examination, if only to ensure they don't fall down.

If a project is not funded to do something, do you think the project should contract a company and just do it?

Near where the 3 ridings meet
What are these for? seen on a platform wall at Derby Stn. Not a Datum plate.

Derby Station gives the platform number and plate number.
The datum plate is about 4 - 5 metres away in each case.

Is it a case of the Renewal chainage markers not lining up with the Datum plates?
Does that mean that 2 readings will be needed for levelling or gauging?
