Correct. It takes ~17 minutes to do Saltcoast to Largs. Hence, one can't get 4tph through that section.
I wonder if making the Up freight line available to passenger trains would suffice?

In theory, yes. Hunterston Junction to Largs is ~8 minutes with the stop at Fairlie.I wonder if making the Up freight line available to passenger trains would suffice?
Can they do that with the single passenger line from Saltcoats to Largs? I thought that was one of the reasons Largs is still only hourly.

Could a passing loop be installed anywhere on that single track section?

Few months back I was on a 19:35 XC Newcastle - Birmingham New St which stopped at Wilnecote; I take this train quite often and it never normally stops there.
Maybe a special stop order to cover a cancelled Flymo from Nottingham?
1S35/1V70 are the only XC service to the north from Bristol TM that calls via Gloucester
Still fairly irregular1s35 runs via Gloucester in a Saturday only.
1v64 1308 Edinburgh - Plymouth travels via Gooucester and divides when running as 2x220.
In the opposite direction, 1m77 2000 Bristol TM - Birmingham travels via Gloucetser.
