In theory, yes. Hunterston Junction to Largs is ~8 minutes with the stop at Fairlie.

Can they do that with the single passenger line from Saltcoats to Largs? I thought that was one of the reasons Largs is still only hourly.

You could easily electrify and add on a new platform at West Kilbride, with the Glasgow service changing tracks at Hunterston Junction. Ardrossan South Beach is a bigger issue, as there is a park right opposite the train station. A new platform at South Beach would also means trains wouldn't need to be held at Saltcoats.

I think that may be what they end up doing then. Though IIRC the Up freight line isn't electrified.

Yeah that was my first thought too, would have been quite late by time we got there so maybe it was that the last stopping service from Wilnecote to New St was cancelled and we covered it.

Until I.B.M stopped being a station every train stopped there exept 2W21 16:35 Glasgow Central to Wemyss Bay, the only station it skipped was IBM too, rather odd...

The summer Sunday from Edinburgh - Oban and back is the only West Highland service to not call at Dumbarton Central.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but the 10:40 Glasgow Central to Euston calls randomly at Rugby, rather than running non stop from Warrington to Euston.

1v64 1308 Edinburgh - Plymouth travels via Gooucester and divides when running as 2x220.

In the opposite direction, 1m77 2000 Bristol TM - Birmingham travels via Gloucetser.

Not so much an unusual stopping pattern as unusual platform call and route. The 23:12 from Waterloo to Basingstoke goes via Putney easy and thus departs Clapham Junction from platform 6.

I had considered boarding it the other night but hadn't realised it departed from platform 6.

I wasn't going to Basingstoke so it didn't matter too much. I wouldn't be surprised though if others who do wish to board it go to the wrong platform..

Horsham to Peterborough sometimes calls earlswood salfords omitting coulsdon south and merstham but normally the other way round or skips horley in the down direction in the pm peak presumably due to a southern extra stopping there

Only the first two down and last up stop Purley and or Norwood junction

A few more unusual ones from the Southern region:
The 1521/1551/1621 Victoria to East Grinstead trains on Mondays-Fridays call at South Croydon in order to pick up schoolchildren. The 2353 Victoria to Oxted (last train) also stops there Mon-Sat.
The 0017 London Bridge to Caterham (& Tattenham Corner at weekends) stops at Norwood Junction unlike any other of these fast trains.
Not such a regular service but the 0634 Bedford to East Grinstead is the only against-the-flow peak Thameslink train to stop at Riddlesdown, Upper Warlingham and Woldingham - again think that this is to suit school needs.
