Im looking to go from Magdeburg to Thale and maybe a few trips afterwards.

I'm not sure if it's the same ticket or I'm looking at another product - the prices are similar but the DB website mentions nothing of being valid in other states. Although the description looks copied and pasted.

That is what it appears to say. If no one else confirms/denies then I'll have a proper look when I get home and not from a phone. Some tickets are valid in more than one Land e.g. Schleswig Holstein was also valid in Mecklenburg Vorpommern.

Yes it's valid in the entire area.

A Sachsen/Thueringia ticket would also be valid in the same area.

"Das Länder-Ticket wird in allen Verkehrsverbünden auch in Bus und Straßenbahn anerkannt. Darüber hinaus bieten Ihnen die Verkehrsverbünde in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen Verbundtarife für Bus und Bahn an."

The ticket is valid in the tariff areas in Sachsen, including on buses and trams. It is also usable in the three tariff areas specified on buses and trains- that's what I read from it anyway!

The Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia Tickets are three different names for the same thing. They are also valid in some bordering areas of Brandenburg, Hesse and the Czech Republic:

Extraordinarily good value - even by Laenderticket standards. Do explore the tiny Halberstadt tram network (nice little city too) and/or Quedlinburg (or Wernigerode). But TBH you haven't that much time.

Originally the plan was to rent a car but it turns out the place I booked it at doesn't take debit cards and I don't own a credit card.

Extraordinarily good value - even by Laenderticket standards. Do explore the tiny Halberstadt tram network (nice little city too) and/or Quedlinburg (or Wernigerode). But TBH you haven't that much time.

Unfortunately the only ticket I've used that's resulted in a bus driver around Rudolstadt getting aggressive with me and insisting it's only for DB.

Even if it wasn't good for his bus, some human emotion from him other than anger wouldn't have gone amiss

S/he might have been right - bus validity is patchy and difficult to check.

I *think* it was valid. But like you say, it was hard to prove and the driver tried to throw me off while I was waiting for the validity document to load.

What frustrated me is the train was late into the station connecting with a rail replacement bus for the last leg, so the bus left with nobody! Hence I jumped on a service bus to avoid racking the delay up to 120 minutes from its current 70.

I'd started the day getting threatened by a homeless bloke on the Berlin S Bahn, and it all went downhill from there, so spirits weren't high

Unfortunately the definitive version is in list form, and the maps don't show VVV boundaries - in the case of the Sachsen/Anhalt/Thüringen ticket, it's valid on all public transport in 7 areas but rail only in others.
(Rudolstadt is on the edge of RMT)
This is the only online map I can find showing boundaries and it's very small scale. There's one in the Rail Atlas too. Can anyone do better?

Yes, that's what I meant by the definitive version in list form. On the map I linked the areas in yellow are participating VVVs - brilliant for Sachsen but hit and miss elsewhere.

Yes, as said, its a 3 in 1. Similar is the Schl/Holstein ticket also valid in Meckl/Vorpommern) /mostly called MacPommes in german. Thus one can travel from Danmarkt till just inside PL (Swinoujscie) with it. There is and remains a cheaper only M/V ticket too, also valid into Hamburg.
I guess that busdriver was richt and acting in what germans consider to be quite normal. The local ´´verbund/which was not quite a Verbund in the real sense' did away with accepting Bahn Tix like Wochenend/land some time in 2017-18 on the BUSes, it remains valid on trains, also others as DB, but not the narrow gauge steamy HarzBahnen. Abellio now runs there mostly.

Just to clarify:
You are describing the VTO in the Oberharz where the OP was headed.
rg177 had bus problems in Rudolstadt in south Thüringen (KomBus).
Neither area has a VVV-type integrated tariff.
