Second tunnel at Glasgow Queen Street?

From the end of the high level platforms at Glasgow Queen Street, you can see what looks like a second tunnel mouth to the right of the tunnel that currently handles all traffic in and out of the station.

I'm curious - does it lead anywhere? Was there ever a second tunnel? Where did it go, and when was it operational? Or was it future proofing that never got used?

Aha! That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for answering, I'd always wondered if it was a long-gone connection to another part of the network, but clearly not.

Nah, that’s stored in the tunnel from Buchanan Street! Why do you think the railway kept that “office block” or as I like to call it, anonymous TMD on the station site? It’s even been done up recently!

If they were there the Glasgow Scrap Fairies have long disposed of them, if you go on to the Urban Glasgow site there are extensive discussions and photographs of the tunnels at Queen Street and Buchanan Street, couple of guys managed to get into Buchanan Street Tunnel, unfortunately there is nothing in there to see!
