From the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...enamed-after-tottenham-hotspur-club?CMP=fb_gu

The railway station near Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is to be renamed after the club lobbied the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, and his transport office, who had insisted that the club should pay more than £14.7m for the privilege.

The north London Premier League club first approached Transport for London (TfL) more than two years ago wanting to change the name of White Hart Lane station to Tottenham Hotspur.

A memo of understanding between the club and TfL, controlled by Khan, is now being drafted but Spurs won’t have to meet the multimillion pound asking price which it has vigorously contested.

The club, one of Britain’s wealthiest, will regard the decision as a win as it seeks to cash in on a new 62,000-capacity stadium which has been hit by delays and escalating costs. However, the move is likely to spark concern about the loss of revenue and the precedent it sets for the corporatisation of London’s heritage transport network.

Renaming is rare on the network. This seems a very interesting idea.

Doesn't seem to be that controversial.

If TfL are to get £14 million from Spurs, that should mean Network Rail (whose Station it is) should expect £10 million of that.

Maybe Drayton Park should be renamed "The Arsenal" (so not to be confused with the tube station)… Especially as no trains stop during match days :)

And probably rival fans leaving empty bottles of beer/wine on the platform due to Spurs' history of bottling it at key moments.
Maybe put a recycling bin on the platform? They wont need one for metal though as I'm pretty sure the trophy cabinet is empty.

Arsenal tube station was originally called Gillespie Road but legendary Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman lobbied London Transport, successfully it seems, to have it changed to 'Arsenal'.

Leaving aside the amusing banter, a name change with no contribution from (yet at the behest of) a very rich beneficiary frankly stinks a bit. The station already shares the name of the stadium FFS

Article says TfL are not getting £14M. Sounds like Spurs will be paying sod all which is ridiculous. Would they let TfL put a logo on their kit for nothing? I doubt it.

True, TfL won't get a penny as it's not in their gift to make the decision. It's a National Rail station, and most of the system costs will fall outside of TfLs sphere of influence, and I doubt Network Rail or RDG will pay. It is a lot more complex than simply printing some leaflets and ordering new signage. Although I am prepared to sponsor the renumbering of a platform to a new platform " 0". Having sold lots of commercial property I would expect Network Rail to be very happy to uses this an example to work out sponsoring opportunities through the selling of station names. At a very least they will want all costs covered.

How much will it cost to change the signage, maps, service announcements?

It seems daft to be doing all of that if there is no contribution from the club.

Slightly off topic, but I heard there was a "campaign" by some Spurs fans to rename Arsenal tube station back to Gillespie Road when they moved away from Highbury.

The new stadium won't (officially) be known as White Hart Lane though, it'll be sponsored

Do TfL have the right to change the names on Overground stations in this way anyway, seeing that they still are part of the National Rail network?

A strange one which might open the floodgates, Fulham Broadway could become Chelsea FC for example, while Charlton could become Charlton Athletic :D

You may well joke about it, but it could well open up pandoras box for TfL if they go ahead with this move, especially if they (read as, mainly tax payers) have to pay for all the changes.

It does say it’s subject to public consultation so not necessarily a done deal just yet.

Reminds me of an amusing tale, a mate of mine, when he was a kid in the late 50s, went with his dad to Tottenham v Everton they caught the Liverpool-Euston sleeper both ways[sometimes they'd catch the Birkenhead-Paddington sleeper] this was one of their first visits to London, trying to find Spurs ground, however the station they got of for Spurs ground was Tottenham Court Road, miles away from the ground, & i'm sure that foxed many first time visitors to London when trying to find Spurs ground in those days.:E

The match incidentally was the famous 10-4 to Spurs one.

The Grauniad article says £3m implementation costs (as amending computer software is the biggest cost, £3m seems cheap) after which the commercial benefits are estimated to be £11.7m over 10 years, although quite how that figure is arrived at is anyone’s guess.

It's left open to interpretation but I'd hazard a guess that renaming the station to Tottenham Hotspur then facilitates Spurs in their efforts to rename the stadium. If White Hart Lane (the stadium) becomes, for the sake of argument, The Nike Arena then Spurs will make a lot more than £3m from the deal. Maybe TFL or whoever is handling this deal from the railway's point of view feel they should get a cut of the naming rights money they are helping Spurs secure.

Renaming of buildings is dealt with my local Borough in London and I don't think they can just reanme a building to anything they like.

Under current gudiance, one shouldn't rename a building to a name already in use or a similar name already in use.

Would Tottenham Hot Suor would he too close in name to Tottenham Court Road if it to cause confusion? That would be the kind of thing they would need to consider

You already have both Tottenham Hale and South Tottenham stations which are obviously closer to the stadium than Tottenham Court Road too.

Exactly the point I was going to make. The main complaints from the good citizens of Bicester was that there is more to Bicester than just Bicester Village. And doesn't the same apply here? It isn't a station just for Spurs, but for the local Tottenham area.

Tottenham Hot Sour? That the name of a Chinese take away near the ground?

I'm of the mind that the station is already named White Hart Lane and Tottenham play at, sponsorship aside, White Hart Lane, although granted the ground is not in White Hart Lane.

Let's do the lot, and why not if this could put some money into the transport system? We've had suggestions about changing Fulham Broadway to Chelsea and adding 'Athletic' to Charlton.

We could change Putney Bridge to Fulham (in fact it would be more suitable, as it's not in Putney and is near the end of Fulham High Street).

Pudding Mill Lane could become West Ham South, and Stratford could become West Ham East. Would it be worth changing Stratford International as well?

Norwood Junction could become Crystal Palace East and Selhurst could become Crystal Palace South.

Shepherds Bush on the H+C Line could become Queens Park.

To prevent confusion, today's Queens Park could be renamed West Kilburn; Crystal Palace could become West Anerley or North Norwood; West Ham is a bit tricky, West Plaistow or South Stratford perhaps?

South Bermondsey could become Millwall. There would be no confusion here, as there isn't a Millwall station at the moment.

Pudding Mill Lane would need to be West Ham United South etc.. and Shepherd's Bush would have to be renamed Queen's Park Rangers to match the Tottenham Hotspur renaming.

If the proposal was to just rename White Hart Lane to Tottenham it would probably cause less fuss.

Also, the other teams would want the same deal as Spurs ie paying sod all so it wouldn't put money in to the transport system.

Palace is a listed station so probably a non starter and CPFC don't regard it as an issue.

LB Croydon already wanted to rename Norwood Jn as North Croydon, to "reflect it heritage and area better" (or get the council more business rates!) then there was local campaign to keep the real area heritage including a faction for reverting to the original station name "Jolly Sailor" (the pub next to the station).
