Evening all. I’m a qualified electrician and electronic systems engineer. I have 18 years experience on the tools and currently have an estimating role within the company I currently work for.

I feel I have reached as far as I want to go with my current company and was wondering how easy is it to transition from my current role into a technicians role?

Although not my forte, I’d say you have some excellent transferable skills which would be of benefit to the railway. Depends what you want to do, but often the person specification for fully skilled fitters tends to indicate that anybody with a technical qualification or skill such as yours would be suited to the role.

Thanks Stigy. It's just something I really fancy doing, I've also applied for the trainee drivers role which I'm currently in the sift for. I've always fancied a career on the rail and I've applied for an out station technician role but I'm yet to hear anything.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time. I'm into my 8th year with my current company and I've claimed the ladder as it were. I've achieved what I set out to do there and now i just feel like there's no job satisfaction. I need a new challenge. Plus I've recently become a parent and I want to be able to have some flexibility so working shifts really appeals to me. At the moment I'm 8-5 so there little chance of ever having the pleasure in dropping my daughter off to school or even picking her up, I need a better work life balance.
