Had problems taking pictures of the railways?

I've tripped over those wheel-along suitcases many times, but never once tripped over a tripod leg, and I have one myself! Can't see them being much of a hazard myself.

As for the Northallerton incident, I had a feeling that'd be the case. Spoils it all for the more professional enthusiasts when station staff become more heavy-handed towards us because of some peoples foolish actions.

here we have a video of those responsible

Those guys were nothing compared to these lunatics!

Does castration work for a horn fetish?

Luckily, if I want to go to Northallerton, which I do regularly, I am ok with the few staff the station has so I rarely get problems. It generally hasn't been bad for individuals, it is when groups turn up that they are starting to get wary, and for good reason!

Bound to be an accident soon the way those idiots at Northallerton are going on. Saw one with a hi-viz jacket on, what would a driver do if he saw that lunatic waving his hand up and down?

What's the situation at Carlisle these days, I remember the night time photography was 'discontinued' due to that letter, is it still the same?

Whether one agrees with the no flash rule or not is irrelvent. The fact of the matter is the rule IS there and must be abided by.

As to whether or not it affects the drivers Id have to say it entirely depends on the conditions, but seeing as some members of the rail community cant be trusted to act reasonably (as seen in the many Youtube videos) when out photographing/fliming trains Im not sure id want to trust them with a flash.

After having a few minor problems there in the past when i went to Waterloo on Saturday evening to see 35028 Clan Line i signed in at the Network Rail office having asked if i could take pictures of the railtour that would be coming in soon and got given a station visitor pass, in and out within 1 minute. When showed to the staff at the gates they simply let me through and i even asked the customer information desk if they knew exact timings and platform numbers of the train which they did :). I saw the train fine, it was good, although slightly contradicting when many SWT and Network Rail staff took pictures themselves of the loco and when i was done i handed the pass back to the office and left. Alot easier than i thought and ultimately less hassle than previous visits to the stations.

I regularly take photos on stations and often near the platform edge and ends as I'm a track man and am more interested in the track, not the trains. I am always careful and always keep an eye out for approaching trains. I will take the photo then move back away from the platform edge straight away.
If I'm on Coventry, the staff know me anyway so they know I'm ok and I don't bother signing in. If I'm on Brum New Street, no-one has ever batted an eye-lid and all tracks are 10mph anyway so again, as long as I'm careful, there's no problem.
Anywhere else and I'll at least tell any platform staff nearby what I'm doing.

As someone who has watched someone who appeared to be minding their own business on the end of a station platform suddenly jump off said platform into the path of an 85mph express train with obvious results, I have every sympathy with staff who get a little uneasy with people hanging around on the end of platforms, although there is no need for immediate rudeness and aggresive confrontation.

I would happily explain myself politely to any staff members. I find that offering to show them my photos often diffuses any worries they may have. Most of the time they don't bother actually looking at them, but sometimes they do. I've even had a few comment on how interesting my photos are, and one who said "how boring, but whatever keeps you happy". They have then let me be!

I've had no issues whatsoever at Northallerton.
In fact when I was last there month and half ago staff were ok as I informed them I was there and also asked if it were ok.
Even met the local PCSO for the BTP who seemed pretty chilled out. Started to talking about the demise of steam and onto modern traction... Offered to show a few shots and all was fine and dandy..... Very nice BTP PCSO ;)

Popped upto Berwick today,
checked with the staff first and all was fine.....
Freezing conditions meant a few delays/cancellations however didnt get any hassle until.
An AXC service for Edin made an unscheduled stop as it horns were frozen totally. Asked the driver if it were ok to take some snaps to which he said yes.
Then a touchy member of EC staff said ' if I find this on youtube i'll remove it'..... I find that amusing as it isnt going onto youtube!
What the hell is going on? EC staff from the start were ok and then AXC was cool, so whats the problem?
Why cannot EC follow on from FCC, SWT and VT stance on enthusiasts?

you put it on youtube if you want to. videos of trains is not against youtube rules so it wont get taken down.

The best station where East Coast is always friendly is Durham nealy all the staff know me and they are rail enthusiasts themselves. I have been at that station for more than 7 years always welcome to take photos and videos.

I wonder whether the EC staff thought the footage you'd taken may not show the railway in the most professional light. At the end of the day, it's probably best not to worry about it!!!! If the XC driver was happy to be filmed I'm sure everything was as it should've been so I'd just leave it at that!

Well my pal is putting it up regardless!
Just as usual the Slap-Dash attitude of 'Certain NXEC/EC Staff'.... Enthusiasts can something off, should be station hands should..

Durham is cool, not been there yet, maybes we should hook-up ;)

I'm not worried at all about, just the attitude issue is still there.
The driver, Guard and crew were laughing about it and thats what made a little humour on a crappy day with ****e weather.
As per the 'professional light'. Regardless the horns had to be de-iced otherwise the train had to be terminated ;)
Will EC ever adopt the same stance as previously mentioned?

You will like it. best place to stand is ether end of the southbound platform my favorite platform.

On the northbound platform the barriers are now in operation but the barrier staff have been informed of the rules and when you go just tell them you are taking pictures and they will let you through simples.

Durham is completly jobsworth free:D

I've had the same thing happen to me recently and I found it funny too - it's all part of the job. The only way of coping with adversity is to laugh about it!

As for attitude, tbh, staff have had a lot to put up with this week - the railways have descended into a shambles and we're all a bit fed up! I suspect the platform staff were worrying about nothing. It's just one of those things!

True, however the way 'Paying customers' were being treated very badly aswell it was totally shocking. I'll be glad to see the back of this weather eventually, three weeks of snow is NOT fun :(

In fairness, I've every sympathy with them too! The fact is these conditions have tested everyone's patience. The paying customers I've encountered have almost without exception been bvery understanding in the most trying of circumstances. It's been good to see some British spirit this week tbh - I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of customers who haven't understood what's going on this week. Maybe I've been lucky, maybe keeping people informed helps, maybe it's a bit of both!

Information was pretty good this morning on the 1S03 ;) With the barriers @ Bale frozen in the 'UP' posistion, the train crew did a fab job in keeping us updated ;)

Info at Berwick at times was spot on and also sketchy however with the conditions I can expect that. Today I shall just to put down to the fact that it was another testing day

I'm heading back there in 2 weeks time so will give it another go ;)

I was asked to leave Harrow & Wealdstone on Saturday (23rd) The jobsworth said that it was an Underground station, therfore the rules don't apply

The station is MANAGED by London Underground, but I'm not sure who owns it? Is it Network Rail? If so, I believe the NR guidelines will apply, and photography is permitted.
