Hello. I have an unusual situation, have read national rail terms, searched for a solution on here without success so hoping it can be cleared up.

I need to travel Leighton Buzzard > St.Albans City anytime single (£24.80)

however I want to pop into the middle of London (moorgate) for a few hours first.

1. Can I use the + to travel from Euston to Moorgate on the northern line or is that not valid as i should be doing Euston to Kings Cross?

2. Can I use the purchased ticket to travel from City Thameslink to St. Albans City (as i will be near) or do i need to buy an additional ticket (or use oyster) from City Thameslink to St. Pancras to continue the journey.

I am after the most cost efficient routing for an anytime single from Leighton Buzzard > St.Albans City but with 2 hours in the Moorgate / Bank area first.

Any advice appreciated

Tube barriers will let you out anywhere in Central London but you can't then get back in - break of journey isn't allowed. So you will have to use Oyster/contactless for one leg.

The Leighton Buzzard to St Albans ticket will be valid between Euston and Kings Cross St Pancras or between Euston Square and Farringdon. It is also valid to travel from Euston to Moorgate, but then only valid from Farringdon to St Albans (and intermediate stations). You would have to pay between City Thameslink and Farringdon. In practise, as Moorgate is an NR station, the ticket may work the ticket gates at Moorgate on the section of the journey to St Albans, but you should be aware that officially the ticket would only be valid from Farringdon, even if the ticket works the barriers.

Thank you, very helpful information. I will go to Moorgate as planned and take a walk to Farringdon when im done. Hopefully that works but ill have my Oyster as a backup if required or its raining :)

Is this actually valid via Farringdon?
Interested if anyone has the data to show that it is.

I guess in my case im interested in if its valid and if the barrier would open with the ticket from outside the station as normally the transfer would be from tube to national rail without barrier at Farringdon (if coming from Euston Sq) :)

With a cross London transfer journey planners often suggest changing at Farringdon. In this case Leighton Buzzard - Euston - Euston Square - Farringdon - St Albans.

While I note that the National Rail website says

Tickets displaying this indicator are valid for travel between any two stations shown in the ‘Station List' (below) appropriate to the route of the through journey being made.

can and would a TfL revenue inspector actually charge a penalty fare if travelling in Zone 1 on a "+" ticket off route? How materially off route do you need to be? I concede that Leighton Buzzard to St Albans is more difficult to argue about than, say, Slough to Romford.

Thinking about it if you interchange between the Underground and National Rail at Moorgate using a ticket with a Maltese Cross you don't need to pass through the gate line. Therefore rejecting tickets with a Maltese Cross is understandable, although you can break a cross London connection short it wouldn't be a normal thing to do.
