1st class ticket restrictions

sorry if this has been mentioned before but i could not find the thread.

just a quick 1, i was looking at tickets from chester to glasgow, i found a nice 35 pound advance 1st class single fare in both directions. but it involves going from chester to warrington bank quay 1st, im i allowed to do this as no 1st class is available on that part of my journey.

it wont let me do chester-crewe-glasgow on the cheaper 1st class fare.

Yes, but you'll have to sit in standard class if that's all the train has, swapping to First at Warrington

TIP: Get a Pendolino, the first class service is far superior to that of a voyager but the same price.
Pendolinos usually depart at xx14 with Voyagers at xx27

You're allowed to travel in standard on a first class ticket. With regular (non-advance) tickets the portion of the price for routes with no first class service (e.g. the Conwy Valley) is in line with standard pricing.

Odds are that the advance quotas for Chester-Crewe and Crewe-Warrington have already been taken by people travelling to and from London. Sometimes if you ask for extended change times or insist on changing at intermediate stations you can get NRE to put you on a local train for those portions where the quotas aren't gone. A savvy person at a ticket office might be able to help you do that too, although you'd be unlikey to get first class accomodation all the way.

If you hold a seat reservation for a particular service (ATW Llandudno - Manc Picc would be my guess) then travel on that train in the accommodation available.

If your only reservation is Warrington BQ - Glasgow Cntl, but your ticket says Chester - Glasgow Stns, then you can take any train from Chester to Warrington in order to catch the booked connection

The extra change on the way back will be because you're on the super fast service which goes direct to Euston from Preston. Have you bought the tickets yet?

If yes, what tickets do you have?
If no, what date are you travelling?

The Arriva Chester - Manchester Picc (via Warrington) trains are reservable - I've had a booked seat on one before with an Advance ticket. Your ticket will most likely come with reservations for each of Chester - Warrington and Warrington - Glasgow, so you have to use those trains. But what's the problem? The Arriva trains on that route are quite reasonable and it'll be quicker than going via Crewe too (if connections are any good).

i dont know an exact date i will travel on, i used march 22nd as an example date to get a rough idea.

But if he agrees to pay a negative supplement, does not dress too smartly and isn't too quiet, and agrees not to use a 17" laptop only 1mm thick, doesn't attempt to consume a 4 course luncheon, and doesn't drink any wine, then I suppose he could be allowed to join the masses in Standard. No prawns or truffles may be consumed either.

Robert, I've just tapped in your details and I've got the 0952 from Chester to Warrington, arriving 1018 to connect with the 1027. Don't do it! Not first class!

A single CTR-WBQ is £7.20
Virgin's site offer me £75 for the 1014 (Pendolino - good times)
or £86 for the 1027 (Voyager - bad times)

Obviously these prices will change depending on when you book for.

I'd seriously advise against a through advance ticket if you're travelling First Class though. It's really not worth the money on a Voyager (click me!)

Yeah, you'll be in standard accommodation between Chester and Warrington, but that's perfectly valid.

10:14 WBQ to GLC 13:01- £86 FC Advance Single

10:14 WBQ to PRE 10:38- £12.90 FDS [valid on any train that date]
10:41 Preston to Glasgow 13:01- £33.50 [FCS] - Advance Single

£46.40 instead of £86- same train, simply split at Preston for the 'FCS' advance first single.

I'm fully aware of that, with me travelling on Pendolinos Preston-Glasgow [First Class] far too much, I was just showing how you can usually save a great deal of money by splitting at Preston, when travelling to Glasgow from Warrington or Wigan on a direct Pendolino service.
