I could not buy a day travelcard for my Oyster online so I just bought a paper ticket at the station instead

From my understanding of it, you must touch in at the border station.

So if you were to board a Non Stop service from Woking, you'd need to get the full ticket to Waterloo & use it as normal; But if you board a stopper/semi which calls at Surbiton, then you can just use a ticket to Surbiton get off & touch in there and resume your journey.

Well unless they've got the touch pads working on the barriers or SWT's own station card readers have been modified! I guess it does.

AFAIK the guards only carry hand scanners to check whether the card's valid & has credit, whether they have a phone link in them I don't know, unlikely being SWT & TfL.

Indeed, see my posts in http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=29219, where I state it is only convenient for Londoners, starting their journey within the zones.

I think there is some confusion here.

Travelcard validity on Oyster is not changing. You have always been able to use a Travelcard on Oyster on National Rail. However one day Travelcards have never been available on Oyster and that has not changed.

What's changed is Pay As You Go (PAYG) on Oyster is now available on all National Rail routes. When you reach the cap that counts as a Travelcard except you can still be chinged a whopping great big "maximum" fare if you do not touch out, but for an actual Travelcard you won't be.

What matters is the product, not the medium. But One Day Travelcards are only available on paper, not Oyster.

I read on a previous post that you cannot combine a paper ticket and PAYG. My problem is that I have an annual Woking to zones 2-6 goldcard. If I want to travel to zone 1, and I am on a non-stop train, I presume I have to buy an extension (paper) beforehand. However, they say that cheap day returns are not being sold any more but only available on oyster PAYG. How does this work. Why can't the oyster PAYG carry the information that you have in the paper ticket?

It means you can't use a Non Stop service, you'll need to go to Clapham Junction, touch in & then rejoin then next available train to Waterloo or Victoria or buy the extension from a commercial guard.

You probably know that the RPI's on the gateline at Waterloo are generally like a rottweiler after a meat joint, to PF you especially if you make it a habit as they get to know the regulars.

First Day Return..................£7.20
Standard Day Return............£4.30
First Day Single...................£3.60
Standard Day Single.............£2.40
Oyster PAYG off peak single...£2.10
Oyster PAYG peak single........£1.70

So you can either get off at Clapham Junction in each direction to tap in and out your Oyster card or purchase a SDR at Woking for an extra few pence.

I have learned to check the PI screens before touching in and realising it's a Sunday. 1tph isn't worth it for a journey of about 1.5 miles.

Really, well I do know as the RPI's do of the fiddle to avoid the gatelines at Waterloo & I do know that every morning & evening peak there are plain clothed RPI's doing reconnaissance runs on the trains.

I do find it quite interesting the lousy excuses that pax use to justify their fraudulent travel as well & the whinnying about being caught.

Personally I'd like to see the same system as they use on the T&W Metro used on all mainline services, get caught you're named & shamed.

Found this little snippet of information BTW for Oyster Card users.

If you are planning to use Oyster pay as you go on National Rail services in London but outside the Zones covered by your Travelcard, you will need to set an Oyster Extension Permit (OEP) on your card before you travel. If you travel without an OEP you may be liable to a Penalty Fare or prosecution. Please note the following important points about OEP:

* Only set your OEP to your card just before you make your extension journey

* You must have a minimum £1.50 pay as you go balance on your Oyster card to set one

* OEP can be set at any Tube or London Overground station ticket office or touchscreen ticket machine; Oyster Ticket Stops; selected National Rail ticket offices or self service ticket machines displaying the Oyster card reader logo

* An OEP remains on your card until you touch out at the end of your journey

* When touching out at your destination station, the OEP will be cleared from your Oyster card and the correct fare for the extension journey will be deducted from your pay as you go balance

I will just be using my Oyster card in the PAYG way when I get to London. Then when it reaches the cap for a Travelcard, thats as high as it will charge me.

But if you are are going to reach the oyster cap later, you would buy a paper day travelcard instead of a return to Waterloo, as the cost of a day travelcard is the same as the oyster cap.
